Mental Fight Club is the latest creative force for mental well-being in Southwark and beyond.
Our aim is to foster greater awareness of the connectedness of our inner and outer worlds and ourselves to one another - whoever we may be. Our formation was inspired by the experience of mental illness, group therapy, the art of William Blake, the myth of St George, the music of Nick Cave and the film Fight Club, amongst many other things.
Initially, we arose during 2003/04 as an informal association of around 200 individuals who met to perform and listen to Ben Okri's inspirational epic poem, Mental Fight, which remains a core thread in our current work. Our founding meetings were held in small venues near London Bridge - a church crypt, a rooftop garden, a hospital atrium, a chapel and an Elizabethan free vintners. Mental Fight Club now has over 500 members. Around half have direct experience of mental illness. The First Rule of Mental Fight Club is ‘First Rule’ You can tell anyone and everyone about Mental Fight Club.
