Video Games
rant by Demon
As a video game player myself, it is my belief that violent video games do not increase aggression to a point where it is to any concern.  To declare that the video game industry that creates games like Doom, Half-life, Grand Theft Auto, and Quake are responsible for shootings is absolutely absurd.  The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has already created a rating guide, easily seen and understood on the games themselves.  M is for mature.  You have to be 17 or older to purchase it.  T is for teen.  E is for everyone.  AO is adults only, and I have yet to see a game that actually uses that rating. EC is early childhood, suitable for children 3 and older.  In addition, the ratings come with a description of what is in the game that makes it, for example, M instead of T

I know as a fact, that violent video games provide a major benefit.  I am aggressive, I have been for as long as I can remember, and I still am.  I’m not necessarily attracted to violent video games because of that aggression, nor does my aggression increase after playing a violent game.  Violent video games, Grand Theft Auto 3 in particular, have done me much good.  You may ask how.  I’ll tell you how.  Being an aggressive person, I need a suitable outlet for my aggressions.  The only outlet that works well in my experience is violent video games.

Have I gone out and shot someone?  Do I plant bombs in my school?  Do I attempt to kill others?  No, no, and no.  My parents did something useful, they taught me morals.  My parents realized that it is their responsibility as to how I am raised.  I play violent video games.  I’m aggressive.  I do not shoot people in real life, and nor do I try to kill others.

The responsibility lies not with the industry, but with the parent.  To ban all violence from the country is to shelter everyone to the point where they cannot believe violence exists until it happens to them, or someone close to them.  The fact is that violence is all over the place.  Much like high school, it seems that the government as well as anti-violent game parents are trying to shelter people from reality.  True, most people do not go running around shooting people with rocket launchers or tossing molotovs at crowds, but you see, video games are interactive fantasy.  They are entertainment.  ESRB exists to try to ensure that games go into the hands of those who are ready for them.

It is about time that people stop searching for scapegoats and realize that they need to take responsibility.

This applies to every aspect of life.  If something bad happens, most people try to blame others for the cause.  If it is their own fault, they need to realize that and try to fix the problem instead of playing the blame game.
