The views and beliefs of the Bloomington Indiana Gospel Assembly Church do not reflect the same views of all of the Gospel Assembly Churches that are affiliated together with us. We are striving continually for unity of the faith through Jesus Christ our Savior.
AN ANGEL IS:  A HEAVENLY MESSENGER

Angels are and have been an important part of our lives.  They do a lot of work for the Lord.  They mingle with mankind, and play a part -- a very important part.

Angels are neither male nor female. They do not reproduce, but they can take on form. In the New Testament they are mentioned as being white, glistening, and shining.  In the Old Testament they look as we do.

Angels were made by God the father through Jesus. Ephesians 3:9: -- And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ.

Colossians 1:12-19
: -- Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light: 13-Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14-In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15-Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16-For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17-And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18-And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preemininence. 19-For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell.

DID YOU KNOW:  Angels appear 201 times in 192 verses.

Angels were created like man, spoken into existence. Psalms 148:2 and 5:--  Praise ye him, all his angels; praise ye him, all his hosts. 5-Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created.  Each angel was a direct creation from God.  A direct creation of God is referred to as "Sons of God", Luke 3:38: -- ...which was the son the Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.  Job 2:1: -- Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.

Angels neither marry nor are given in marriage. Matthew 22:30: -- For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.  The angels do not get married and they do not reproduce.  Angels will not increase nor decrease; they cannot dieLuke 20:35-36: -- But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 36-Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

When were the angels created? Job 38:1,4,7: -- Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 4-Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou has understanding. 7-When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? This was before the earth was created.

Why were the angels created? Colossians 1:16
: -- ...all things were created by him, and for him. They were created to glorify God.  Hebrews 1:6: -- And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.  They were created to worship him. They lift him up.  Revelation 4:11: -- Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. They were created for his pleasure.

How many angels are there?  Hebrews 12:22: -- But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an INNUMBERABLE company of angels. Revelation 5:11: -- And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands.

What do angels look like? Matthew 28:2-3
: --  And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3-His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow.  Mark 16: 4-5: -- And they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. 5-And entering into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.  The angel appeared young and it was at least 4000 plus years old, so they do not age.

Angels are wise. II Samuel 14:20: -- To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.  So we know that they are not foolish, but we also know that angels to not have a complete understanding because they do not know when the Lord is coming back.

Angels have names -- Gabriel, Michael.  They have different powers, different jobs, and different authorities.  The good angels are called Holy Angels.
Matthew 25:31: -- When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory.  They obey the will of God. Psalms 103:20 -- Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

Angels are subject unto Jesus.  I Peter 3:22: -- Who is gone into heaven and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

Angels are ministering spirits.  Psalms 104:4: -- Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire.  They minister and work for the Lord.  Hebrews 1:7: -- And of the angels he saith, who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.

Angels execute judgments of God.  II Samuel 24:15-16: -- So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even Beersheba seventy thousand men. 16-And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thin hand.  And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing place of Araunah the Jebusite.  Let us not forget the death angels work over Egypt.  They will work against the enemy. II Kings 19:35: -- And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. --- 145,000 men were killed.  Acts 12:21-23: -- And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. 22-And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. 23-And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

Angels desire to know things; they ask questions -- they want to learn things. Zechariah 1:12: -- Then the angel of the Lord answered and said, O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou has had indignation these threescore and ten years?  John 20:12-13: -- And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13-And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.  I Peter 1:12: -- Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.  The angels desire to look into what the Lord is doing with mankind, so they have curiosity.

Angels have feelings.  Luke 15:10: -- Likewise, I say unto you there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

Angels praise and worship God.  Psalms 148:2: -- Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.  Luke 2:13-14: -- And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14-Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.  Hebrews 1:6: -- And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.  Revelation 7:11-12: -- And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, 12-Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

Praise in an expression given freely of how they feel towards God.  They give reverence and honor to God.  They give glory to God which is a very adoring praise.  Worshipping and thanksgiving are very emotional things.  So angels have emotions and feelings.  Angels have a will, they are holy, pure, feeling, they rejoice, they sing songs (the shepherds heard them), they have a mind, they are strong, young looking in appearance, and can be invisible, they help mankind, bring forth the wrath of God, they can protect man, they have a character, and they have a name.
