About Me
My name is Martha Ann Stegar. I am a retired science writer and editor, with 30 years' experience at the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

My main interests are adventure travel, genealogy, wildlife and the environment, archaeology, music and the arts, and my family.

I have two daughters and three adult grandchildren. My husband, Yalcin Peker, has a daughter and a son. We both love travel, books, music, and animals. We're vitally interested in good government and, fortunately, our political views are the same. Please look at our family photo album, Stegar-Peker Photo Album. Also take a look at Lisa & David's Family Album, pictures of my great-grandson, Elias Flores and Yalcin's Turkish Family. For more pictures of Elias, click here.

I am a long-time volunteer at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History and Zoo Atlanta. Our favorite haunts at the zoo are the gorilla and giant panda habitats. Our memorable wildlife excursions have included African safaris, the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, the annual polar bear migration in Churchill (Canada), and whale watching off Baja California. We have snorkeled all over the Caribbean and the South Pacific, and rafted through the Grand Canyon. I dug two summers at Tel Lachish in Israel and have visited archaeological sites worldwide.

I work sporadically on my family genealogy and now have a database of nearly 2800 individuals. Please look at an account of a Civil War ancestor, Mollie Griffith Stephenson.

In addition to classical music and jazz, I have a special interest in singing Sacred Harp music. This is a variety of "fasola" or "shape note" music based on a scale of five note shapes that was popular among the common folk in 16th and 17th century England and was brought to America by the English settlers. It has been preserved in the rural South and in recent decades has gained popularity all over the United States.
