That variability has the disastrous effect of aiding the evolution and survival of HIV in the same way that the variability of sperm aids the evolution and survival of the human species. If HIV can be generated by events that involve sperm as a source, that might help explain the variability of HIV. Since anal intercourse without a condom can cause sperm to enter the rectum, it’s reasonable to consider sperm as a possible source of HIV; perhaps HIV could thus, so to speak, get a free "variability boost" from sperm meiosis. In my opinion, the paper by the “Gallo group,” on the variability of HIV, which has just cited on the previous page, is most important single paper--of those I’ve read--regarding AIDS. But in my view that paper clearly points to a possible connection between AIDS and meiosis, and there's a serious question as to why that possible connection has not been explored. This is only speculation, but perhaps the need for “political correctness” has provided an inhibiting influence. In the summer of 2005 I happened to hear an expert from the World Health Organization talking on the BBC about her work in the Third World. Part of the message that she wanted to get accross to that part of the world was that oral sex is dangerous. Here in the United States, on the other hand, teenagers have been allowed to believe that oral sex “isn’t really sex.” It seems that in the United Sates, political correctness provides an inhibiting influence and public health officials feel they shouldn’t say that oral sex is dangerous--even though, in fact, it is dangerous. In the instance regarding oral sex, political correctness has clearly left its mark, and American science has failed to serve the public interest. Is the situation the same with respect to the possible connection between AIDS and meiosis? CONTINUE |
