"One could perhaps create a fairly plausible discussion of the evolution of primate male species in which females have no part."
In late August 2005, I sent the following e-mail message to microbiologists across the US and in other countries. I’d hoped that the use of humor might provoke readership.
Until recently the woman who deprecated the importance of her own sex has been an extreme rarity. By default, then, those saying that,
"Those females don't matter much at all," or
      "What use are females anyway?"
. . . and other similar things have been almost entirely men. But now a WOMAN has come forward to challenge male dominance in the role of proclaiming the insignificance of the female sex.
Who, you may ask, is this pioneering woman?
The name of that brave woman, a microbiologist, is Dr. Beatrice Hahn.

Progress: In this, our enlightened age, many professions once the exclusive  role of men, are now being pursued by women.
Soldier of fortune is but one example.
Before sending the e-mails, I’d given Dr. Hahn and her co-worker at the University of Alabama, Dr. George Shaw, several days advance notice. That was to give them a chance to comment. They didn't care to do so on that occasion.
It wasn't that I wanted to single them out. But their position, along with others in what might be called “the Gallo group” regarding the origin of AIDS, was at that time essentially the position of the US government. That was because they'd done pioneering research. And, of course, they deserved full credit for that research, but that didn't mean they were infallible. And their work had been paid for by taxpayers and was affecting many lives worldwide.
