Upon arrival in Tokyo, I went through the subway, and saw this homeless man in one of the main subway stations. There is quite a large homeless population in Japan, but few are seen outside Osaka, I remember in 1995 when the Government gathered a whole lot of the homeless together and put them into a sort of concentration camp to try and alleviate the problem in central Tokyo.
Of course, the man was moved on by a couple of policemen. "You can't sleep here, old man". They do this here in New Zealand too - I'm not sure whether or not there are homeless shelters in Japan, anybody know?
And here is Osaka city, where I spent 2 weeks studying the Buraku issue with the Buraku Liberation and Human Rights Research Institute.
And here is a picture of a makeshift tent that a homeless person has made. There is a whole heap of rubbish and stuff outside the tent and it smells pretty bad (I'm not making any judgement calls here - just describing what I saw). That's Osaka castle in the background.
Lastly, here is a photo of the river with all the tents that homeless people live in running alongside it. I think that they must get material from the authorities because they all have that blue plastic (again, does anybody know?).
