Biographical Information
I was born to Otis and Dora Kirkland on October 5, 1958, in Port St. Joe, Florida. I have one older brother, Ronnie. My family lived in Port St. Joe until the summer prior to my senior year in high school. Due to a transfer in my father’s job, the family relocated in Cottonwood, Alabama.
While in high school I was involved in various civic, academic, and church activities. Although my family moved out of state, I returned to Florida to graduate with the class I began with in kindergarten. I graduated with honors from Port St. Joe High School.
Following graduation from high school. I entered Mobile College as a Sociology/Psychology major. I was involved in Student Government Association, Interclub Council, Student Representative Organization, Mobile College Touring Choir, and other organizations. I worked as a student assistant to the Director of Student Affairs. I graduated from Mobile College in 1980.
My teaching career began fall of 1980 when I was contracted by a Christian school in Mobile, Alabama, to teach fifth grade. Since this time I have taught second through fifth grades and one semester of seventh through twelfth grade English. I have taught for fifteen years in private, parochial and public schools in Alabama and Louisiana.
I have been afforded the opportunity to live and work in many places. Among those are Mobile, Alabama, New Orleans, Louisiana, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Birmingham, Alabama, and Atmore, Alabama. Living in different areas provided exposure to people, places, and many interesting experiences.
Presently I am divorced and living with my two boys, Devin, age eighteen, and Garrett, age thirteen, in Atmore, Alabama. I am a fourth grade classroom teacher at Huxford Elementary. Also I am an Adjunct Reading Instructor for Jefferson Davis Community College. Classes are held on the Brewton and Atmore campuses.
