BLOCK PLAN - Four Lesson Volleyball Unit

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit.
Links on block plan go to task/game sheets.  The task/game sheets contain teaching points, organization pointers, diagrams and images or video clips.

Lesson 1
Tactical Problem
Defending space on your court. The ready position, court positioning and using height to increase
 time for response.
Lesson focus:

Successful execution of the forearm pass, including the following off ball skills: communication, positioning of yourself and accurate placement of the ball.

Introductory task/game
End Zone Volleyball-Rules-every player must touch ball before score may occur, 2 seconds with ball, 2 steps with ball.
    Skill/Concept development tasks/games

    * Forearm pass the ball up in the air to yourself. Concentrate on height and accuracy.

     * In pairs, partners bump to each other. Progressions are; 1) throw ball and forearm pass back 2) throw ball so that your partner has to move to forearm pass back 3) both partners forearm pass
     * Ring of fire: In groups of 3 #1 underhand serves the ball over the net to a receiver  #2 receiver forearm passes the ball to a target #3 the target person is standing where the setter would stand. This person catches the
ball and bounces it back under the net to the server.
     * 1 on 1 forearm passing the ball over the net to each other. progressions: 1) Pass the ball directly over 2) Have to do one pass
to yourself before the ball goes over the net.

Skill/Concept development tasks/games
Culminating Game:
 * 2 on 2 mini game over the net. Rules: 1) Players can only use the
underhand serve and forearm pass  2) the ball has to be touched 2 or 3 times

before sending it over the net. 3) Use a short court, better players can
advance to a full length court but still only using half the width.

Lesson 2
Tactical Problem
Transition from defense to the attack in a more team like situation. Communication and accuracy of
 passes.
Lesson focus:
Be able to set the ball focusing on consistency, increasing response time
by doing appropriate off ball movements.
Introductory task/game
Cone Game-Students are divided into 2 teams- 1 team flips the cones one way, and the other team flips the cones the other way- the team with the most cones wins
Skill/Concept development tasks/games

     * Lie on the ground and push the ball to your partner
     * Standing up set the ball to yourself. Do the same movement as when lying
down. This is performed against a wall, your partner gives feedback while
     you perform the skill.
     * Castle game using the set
     * Expand on RING OF FIRE introduced yesterday.
*This time the target person is setting the ball and the forearm passer will
move in and catch the ball to bounce back.
Better players can advance to having the catcher forearm pass the ball back over the net to the server.
Culminating Game:
    * 2 on 2 mini game over the net/space.

The ball has to be touched 3 times before going over.
The players may use the underhand serve, forearm pass and set.

    Options/Modifiers

*Let the ball bounce once before hitting it
*The dimensions of the court are long and narrow. Those that are struggling
with this can go back to a short court game.
*Force, space, time-these elements may accommodate individual student needs.

Lesson 3
Tactical Problem
To enable students to see how using an overhand serve may give them an
advantage and give them more time to respond and reposition on the serve.
Lesson focus:

To challenge the students in an open environment to use the set and the
forearm pass.  *To introduce students to the serve, [guided discovery]-let them see how the
serve can give them more time to respond and position themselves in game
 play.

Introductory task/game
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
    * [La di daar]
     * serve and trap ball against the wall
     * Groups of two [NETS needed]-1's serve, 2's receive.  Move back as you
become more comfortable.  Receivers pass to themselves and then they serve
     the ball back.
     * Ring of fire:( Groups of 3) using the over hand serve, forearm pass and
     set.
Culminating Game:
    2 vs 2 mini game
Lesson 4

decrease opponents response time. Hitting the ball to a space on opponents' court.
Lesson focus: Spike

  • Pepper using the forearm pass, and set
Skill/Concept development tasks/games

the wall with partner, 1 rule: ball must bounce off the ground and hit wall
each time or a point is awarded to partner.
     * Laaa-Diii-Daar- over net to partner, partner returns.
     * Students in pairs spiking the ball over the net to their partners.  Have
them standing at the 3 point line.-This is because they are short and cannot
