STRATEGIES
TEACHER TIPS

Address both guys and girls in coed classes, instead of
"guys", etc.

Use your "Gym Voice" so that all students can hear

Position yourself at many different angles for students
to see the demonstration

Position yourself on the periphery to facilitate observation
-
Position yourself where you can easily be seen and heard
when talking to whole class
-
Position yourself so the students are not looking into
the sun or looking at a distraction
-
Make sure that the pace you use is appropriate.
Give only a few (maximum 3) clear Instructions then send the students out
to play.

Don't talk too much, a common fault of first time teachers,
allow maximum time on task.
GAMES

Use small groups for a high activity ratio

Modify rules to obtain maximum participation

Avoid elimination activities
-
Modify Space, Object, Force, Equipment, and/or Time to
change level of difficulty
MEETING THE CLASS AS A WHOLE

Designate a specific meeting place for class introductions

Set guidelines and class expectations at the beginning
of the unit

Review important skills from last lesson

Briefly outline the lesson

Gather class after lesson for comments
CLASS RULES
-
Stop and hold equipment when whistle
is blown or students are called in.

Equipment should be placed in bin
or Hula Hoop when not in use
-
No strip results in another activity
or assignment .

Non active students can do a teacher
assesment (eg. time on task sheet.)

Tardiness will be reflected in partipation
grade

Be respectful of yourself, your peers,
and your teacher
EQUIPMENT
-
Teacher must have equipment set up
before class begins.

Spread equipment out to avoid crowding

Assemble class and give instructions
BEFORE equipment is handed out

Handle the equipment with respect.

Don't kick volleyballs.
-
Place equipment in designated areas
after use.

Each player or group is responsible
for their own ball only.
-
Don't have loose balls rolling about,
it increases opertunity for injury and loss of balls.

Use modified equipment to aid in
game play.
-
Use bean bags where possible - they
don't roll or make a noise.
TEACHING SPACE
-
Utilize ALL the space provided.
-
No students should have to sit out
or be too crammed.
-
If there is limited net space then
modify the game to play over a space, hit over head height, etc.
