1. James Turrell-
Turrell's use of light and color led me to think of soaring, ethereal sounds as in a canyon where the deep walls are light at the top and dark at the bottom. Expanding and contracting iris. Opening of a lotus.
2. Robert Rauschenberg
Rauschenberg's chaotic images suggested a disjointed, frantic questing in notes to match his impulsive angst-ridden paintings and sculptures. Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Twyla Tharp, Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp.
3. Clyfford Still
The gentle, smooth tone poems of early Schoenberg, of Erik Satie, and the jagged intrusions of contrast of Stravinsky influence this impression of Still's vast canvases. Sarah Vaughan, Albi Cathedral, Maria Tallchief.
4. Jackson Pollock
Pollock's sensuous swirls and multi-layered goo indicated music that lurched, swam like a mermaid ballet, intertwining fins and hair. Berlioz, Pilobolus, Geary's Bilbao Guggenheim, Charlie Parker.
