"The Pontificator"

This is a website for you the fan can respond if you agree or disagree with my opinion about what's going on in sports (College Football, Baseball). If I find your e-mail interesting and well-thought out, it may be posted here to show differing opinions on the subject.

      Parity in Sports

Baseball is the only sport of the Major 4 (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB) that does not have any kind of salary cap in place. People will argue that there is parity because the World Series Winner has been different every year since 2000 (Yankees, Diamondbacks, Angels, Marlins, Red Sox, White Sox and Cardinals). But the fact of the matter is, the true fan knows every year before Spring Training even starts that teams like the Devil Rays, Royals, Nationals, Pirates, Reds and Rockies are not going to make the Playoffs. Every team should be able to start the season with at least a semblance of a chance to make the Playoffs. In the NFL, every team has a realistic shot at making the Playoffs year in and year out (Save for the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals). In the NBA, there are teams (Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats) who have no shot at the playoffs right now. In the NHL, every team has a shot at the Playoffs because there is no habitually bad team that has had an extended Playoff drought. If Baseball had a Salary Cap, teams like the Devil Rays and Royals would be able to at least have the opportunity to acquire better talent and the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets would have to either have players re-structure their contracts or let them go and make the playing field more level. Imagine if the Yankees had to slash $90 Million (Right now they have a payroll of $190 Million for this season 2007) to reduce payroll to $100 Million (A potential Salary Cap figure). Think of the players they would lose as a result and other teams could pick up and actually be competitive. This doesn't guarantee small market teams would spend the allotted cap money, but it would ensure that top tier teams couldn't go over and at least help level the field a little.

      College Football Playoff

Right now, there are 32 Bowl Games. 32 Games, 2 teams per game equals 64 teams. If the college Presidents could just get their heads out of the sand and see that a March Madness-type Tournament would work and not de-value the regular season, because even if a team clinches a spot, they would still be playing for a top seed to have a easier path to the championship. This argument of the season would be de-valued because of a playoff is bull. Now you have the scenario again of either Michigan or Florida. Somebody gets left out, even though have very even resumes. In March Madness, you could settle it on the court. In College Football, everything is hypothetical and mythical. College Football should be real and championships should be settled on the field of play and not in fantasy and debate. Even if USC had won yesterday, I would still want a playoff, because there are too many one-loss teams to pick just one to oppose Ohio St. Plus, with the 64-team Tournament I have suggested, you would have fan interest from all over the country, instead of just select areas. Everybody would have a chance and every game would be meaningful in the playoffs, unlike the current bowl system, where none of the Bowl Games mean anything, except to line pockets of mostly major conferences and draw minimal TV ratings. To people who say that 17 or 18 games would be too much, most high school that win state championship go 14, 15 games. The pros go up to 19 or 20. Either all conferences should all have a championship game, or none of them should. This business of some do and some don't is wrong to me. I happen to root for a school [UCF] that plays in a conference with a title game and I do not favor it unless either all conferences have it, or none of them have it. My proposal would work and not de-value the season in any way. I feel it would make the season better, more fans would watch games and more schools would feel they have a shot at least competing for a championship. Plus, under my proposal, everyone would benefit, big schools and small schools alike. I can't speak for other people, but my idea I feel would benefit everyone.
