The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [Maximum Carnage]
Is that Gene Simmons or Venom?

Your Spider Sense Has Committed an Illegal Operation

Except for Spiderman the PS1 game (not the one that came out after the movie) I'd say that the super hero games I've played have been crap. The Spiderman and X-Men games for Nintendo were truly awful. The Superman game for Nintendo was at least humerous. Superman, the Hulk, and all the other ones for SNES were poor at best... I'd say that Batman Returns for Sega was playable, and the best I've played was probably the Tick.

Maximum Carnage completely shocked me in that it was a very good game. It is exactly like all other side scrolling fighting games (Streets of Rage, the Tick, etc.) in that you fight four of the same generic bad guys at a time for 20 levels. There are a fwe things to spice up the fighting; a little web-slinging is included. But what makes Carnage entertaining is that mixed in with this truly average fighting game style is that there are great comic book style cut screens, a great storyline, and oodles of super hero appearances.

There are tons of super hero friends that help you out along the way (although wouldn't it be cool if you could control them to?) such as Morbius, Iron Fist, Captain America, the Black Cat, Cloak and Dagger, and others all show up. The wide variety of villians is also a bonus, as you have to beat up a variety of Carnage's cronies as well.

Maximum Carnage
Graphics: 5
The backgrounds have some nice shading although they are very generic and not exceptionally detailed. The generic villians look pretty crappy and stupid. The villians are really poor in their design, girls in french berets, little white guys with their hat backwards, big fat guys, etc. etc. The worst are two guys with umbrellas. Unbelievable. The funniest thing is that this game must have taken a page from Super Punch Out because the girls try to hit you with their hair like Heike Kagero.
Playability: 7
Since this is basically a straight up rip off of all the other side scrolling fighting games, there isn't much to screw up. Just hit the A button rapidly to punch and thats about it. Its on the various webslinging options that the mistakes occur. Its really really hard to grab a super villian by shooting your web at him, and I'm convinced it isn't possible with some of them. This means that the only way to hurt a super villian is to punch him at the right time, which really detracts from the overall fun of the game. It seems that it should be the only way around: the only way to hurt a super villian should have to be with some of the more difficult fighting techniques of the game.
Fun Factor: 6.5
I think what makes this game entertaining is the fact that it is one of the only good super hero games and its cool storyline. Otherwise you are basically playing Streets of Rage with different characters.
