The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [NHL '98]
He shoots, he scores!

Hockey on Ice

This is a fantastic game. Most of the NHL games are nearly identical to their predecessor, sometimes even worse, but this game changed alot from '97 and all for the better. The main thing being that FIGHTS ARE BACK BABY! WOOO! This game is very challenging for a sports game. When I first purchased it, I picked the worst team in the game and set it on the most difficult setting. In a 25 game season I went 5-19-1. I was amazed at how difficult it was. The next season, however, I learned how to score and it was over. I suddenly had a 98% success rate on the power play and I never lost again.

Despite having a reply value hovering around 0, this is still a very good game. When the action stops it feels as if you are watching a Hockey game on ESPN, as different statistics will come onto the screen, or the camera will follow around a different player. Talk about sweet. There are tons of other little things that make the game enjoyable: the players all have their real faces and they push and shove each other in front of the goal, just to name a few.

NHL '98
Graphics: 9
The graphics have improved in the series since this game came out, but this game is just amazing. The 3Dfx are fantastic. This game definitely set a new standard for graphics in sports games. The camera angle seems to cheapen the graphics slightly as it is viewed from a mainly overhead angle, causing most players to be viewed essentially from only the head and shoulders, but despite the camera angle this game is a graphical masterpiece.
Playability: 6
I gave this game a low playability rating for a few reasons- once you find the hole in the AI the game stops being fun. Scoring 7-10 goals a game becomes commonplace. This is the difficulty of most sports games. This absolutely kills the entertainment and makes the game very boring after a few months.
Fun Factor: 8.5
Despite this game having a very low reply value, it is still the best hockey game that was made to date. The AI is tough enough that until you figure out the hole the game is extremely difficult, and the little additions to the game, like fighting and graphics, made this game a must-have.
