My Perfect Child

   As my children were born,
I wanted them to be perfect.

When they were babies, I wanted them to smile
and be content playing with their toys.

I wanted them to be happy and laugh continually
instead of crying and being demanding.

I wanted them to see the beautiful side of life.

As they grew older, I wanted them to be
   giving instead of selfish.

I wanted them to skip the terrible twos.
I wanted them to stay innocent forever.

As they became teenagers, I wanted them to be obedient and not rebellious,
mannerly and not mouthy. I wanted them to be full of love, gentle and kind-hearted.

“Oh, God, give me a child like this” was often my prayer.
   One day he did.
Some call him handicapped……..I call him perfect!

PJ's  'SPECIAL OLYMPICS' DAY
We just couldn't wait for this day to come. Everyone was excited and we were anxious to see how PJ would do. He and his classmates worked hard at school, training for the events they would participate in. We were all there to cheer PJ and his friends on. Here he is with (back) Grandpa, mom and big brother and (front) dad and flanked by two of his best buddies.
PJs events started with the standing broad jump. In practice he did great but, the strange surroundings and noise had many of the new participants overwhelmed so there were second and third  trys to do their best.  PJ did much better in the softball toss. (center) and was on his way to the 50 meter run with a bit more confidence. Waiting for the results of his first two events with his mom, he   covers his ears from the sound of the starting gun. We all lined the track for his run to cheer him on with dad running along the track to guide him and 'Gampy' at the finish line with open arms to greet him. We were so excited, no one got photos!
For PJ it was an exciting and exhausting day. At home we had a special cookout and PJ knew he was the center of it all. He communicated his feelings with smiles, kisses (a special treat for us) and by just making contact with family and guests.  At the end of the day he unwound by juggling q-tips with his buddy Peace by his side. A perfect ending to a perfect day!
