My Beautiful Son Behind your wall, I see your little shadow That somehow got lost along the way Hum me your words, and I'll try and understand What you mean when you take me by the hand Don't cry in the night, my beautiful son We'll watch the moonbeams that dance in the night I'll dry your tears and hum you a goodnight I'll follow you down each path you take And be so proud with each step you make So here I'll wait on top of your wall with my arms stretched out So you'll have to reach a little, my beautiful son Because you are not so far away, not at all Author unknown Why is it so difficult to get insurance coverage for the disabled? P.J. is going through a tough time with cavities right now. He hates to have his teeth touched! The result is four cavities(that's all the dentist can see at this time). To fix them; four root canals, stainless steel caps and about four and a half hours in out-patient sugery. We have no dental insurance and the insurance we do have won't pay for the hospital because it is a dental procedure. We've been ok'd for a loan for the dental work but not for the hospital. Estimate for the dental work: $1,339.00. Estimate for the hospital: $2,000-$3,000. What do you do? BRAIN STORM! Time to get your own insurance? WRONG!!!!!! My husband went to our agent with the story. "Oh", she says "I didn't know you had an autistic child! We can't insure you. Consider yourself lucky to have any insurance at all!". Well, a very helpful lady at the dentists' office gave me a number to call for a program that might be able to help. They've just recognized autism as a disability (not a mental 'illness') in july of 1999. Prior to this it was, and in some places still is, listed under the heading of schizophrenia. This could still be a no win situation. We'll know in about a month. In the meantime, we're keeping our fingers crossed. This program does help other disabilities. Maybe you or someone you know needs extra dental/medical coverage. I'm finding out (the hard way) that there's help out there. New rule-of-thumb....sign up for anything and everything! The worst they can say is "no"! P.J.s Mom HELPFUL RESOURCES In the state of Indiana, you can contact the Children's Special Health Care Services at (800)475-1355 for the office nearest you.
