Ralph's Game Log for Nov 2002   August Log  Sept Log  Oct Log

CarcassonneLunch Time: Having succeeded in getting Scott and Regina to play Trans America I try to hook them on Carcassonne. Regina didn't want to play so I promised her that I'd only play one farmer. She finally agreed. The newbies had a good showing. I had horrible draws getting mostly roads and the cities I did start were either blocked out or catherdal-ed.
Scott (66), Regina (64), Dimitri (64), Craig (59), Me (53)
TraumfabrikB20: The first arrivals had started to play the new Civ the Board game. My first game of the night is my favorite movie making game. I started out fast and made couple of movies. My next movies were heavy in camera work, which slowed down my production pace. Terry waited 2 turns before winning his first bid. I was able to make one bad 4 pt movie. Most of the awards were distributed even around the group making it a very close game.
Rich (70), Becky (69), Me (65), Terry (63), Evan (43)
Taj MahalB20: Thought I had a great starting hand and went for it. Sadly, someone else had a better hand and beat me. I used four cards and got nothing, giving me a horrible start. Richard ran away with this game he had it locked in four turns.
Richard (54), Rich (40), Evan (29), Me (28), Terry (27)
Call My BluffB20: Got killed by higher than average rolls. Richard, Terry, Evan, Me, Rich
Tonga BungaB20: Sailing race game. The speed of your ship is the sum of three dice. The dice are acquired by placing bids for the high and mid die. Other players fill your die selections in order to get the bid. The objective is to visit four of the five islands and return to the original island. At the end, the person with the most money wins. Everyone except Terry had a quick start. I was able to block Scott, which gave me a slight lead. Richard and I finished the race as the same time but my money tally gave me last place. The game is heavy on the luck factor but it was very enjoyable.
Rich (142), Scott (140), Terry (130), Me (93)
Risk: Lord of the RingsB20: Played the latest variant of Risk, which includes Leaders, Event Cards and Missions. The game is placed in Middle Earth and the object is to acquire Victory Point not conquest. The game ends when the fellowship (represented by a Ring) exits the map, which makes the game at least 13, turns long. Dave started out strong and at one point looked like he had taken half the territories. Rich complete several missions, which gave him extra territory cards and additional battalions. He proceeded to beat on Dave. After all was said and done, Rich had 18 territories and 11 points in cards. Dave had 12 territories, 4 strongholds (2 vp per) and 10 pts in cards. I had 12 territories, 2 strongholds and 7 points in cards. I liked the game, the fellowship rule provides a definite end to the game and the mission cards provide plenty of chaos.
Dave F(30), Rich (29), Me (23)
Ogallala B20: Canoe building card game. Objective is to build 3 canoes. Sounded simple but the game really dragged. The "Finishing a canoe, allows you to sink an opponents canoe" just felt like a broken rule.
Rich, Me, Dave
2nd
GuillotineLydia's: Broke in Lydia's game of Guillotine. I got four or the five support cards but also picked up all but one of the gray nobles.
Lydia (36), John (30), Me (28)
Wyatt EarpSOG: Played a hand while we waited for more people to show up. Hand ended on the second shuffle. I captured several of the big pots.
Me (15), Rob (7), Vitas (7), Esa (2)
RoborallySOG: Chris continues his quest to play the classics. Played a simple two tile, two flag race with a 6-point shield on the third flag. Vitas and Todd got out to a quick start and were able to keep it. Vitas was at the finally flag for several turn but couldn't the needed cards to reduce the shield. Todd was able to catch up and take the game. I had a planning accident and die but was within a turn of the flag. Rob was taking a few potshots at a shutdown Chris. Game was enjoyed.
Todd, Vitas, Me, Rob, Chris, Esa
North American RailsSOG: Another game from Chris's classics game list. I decided that with six people we needed to play with the fast rules, I was the only who had played before. The first turn were slow because people didn't know which cities produced which loads. I got lucky and got my first loads centered on Atlanta. Esa started out of Chicago, Chris was in the North East, and Rob started down south in Mexico, Rob and Vitas started out of Kansas City. Chris was by far the unluckiest player in this game. He got the majority of the nasty events and his draws were horrible too. I got lucky having most of my runs between Atlanta and Mexico. I've played this game with three and it took about two hours. With six it was incredibly long, over four hours. We threw in the towel after a Flood event wiped out all of the connections over the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio rivers.
Me (127), Vitas (68), Todd(65), Chris (30), Rob (15), Esa (8)
5th
Settlers of Catan: City and KnightsOnline: Another close game, Lloyd got off to a faster start. He got a metro pretty early in the game. I got longest road mid way thru the game. I was able to build a settlement, a city and get the trader in the last turn to win. Me (13), Lloyd (11), John (10), James (9)
6th
Lost CitiesDimitri's: No regular JATO game night due to illness. Dimitri and I got together at his place for a few games. We play one hand of Lost Cities while we waited for Christine to join us.
Me (95), Dimitri (34)
Trans AmericaDimitri's: Introduced this game to Christine. Didn't have a good Trans American day, I think I only won two hands total in both games.
Dimitri (6), Christine (6), Me (0)
Dimitri (4), Christine (1), Me (-4)
StreetcarDimitri's: Taught Dimitri and Christine this tile laying game. I figured since she likes Carcassonne, she might like Streetcar. Dimitri was only using a half brain since he was on the phone with a friend. I don't think it was impressive enough for Dimitri or Christine.
Dimitri, Me, Christine
Mamma MiaDimitri's: Pulled out Mamma Mia for the closer. Dimitri started out strong getting five pizzas in the first hand. I caught up for the tie. Dimitri really enjoyed it.
Dimitri (7), Me (7)

GuillotineLunch Time: I really liked the idea of chopping off some heads during lunch. Holly and Craig agreed. I finished the last round early by taking Roberspierre which end the day after collecting him. Holly wasn't happy about that. She still won.
Holly (17), Me (15), Craig (12), Dimitri (12)
Mamma Mia!Lunch Time: Since we had 20 minutes left, Dimitri pushed this game. Craig kept complaining that he didn't know what to do but he sure spanked our ass.
Craig (7), Holly (6), Me (5), Dimitri (2)
Trans AmericaMVGA: Quick filler while we waited for more people to show. The game finished in the 2nd when Ralph completed his track and Anton lost 11 points.
Ralph (2), Dan (?), Paul (?), Anton (0)
Puerto RicoMVGA: Starting order: Mike, Dan, Ralph, Paul. Early game; Paul went for the corn shipping strategy. Ralph picked up the small market, office and coffee roaster. Mike picked up the hospice and several large production building. Dan had the hospice, construction hut and tobacco storage. Paul was shipping successfully. Ralph locked up the 6-space boat, which never emptied, with a coffee. Mike got sugar production going. With only two boats available Paul was force to buy the wharf or watch all of his goods rot. Ralph bought the Harbor to catch up in VPs. Dan got his factory going and began generating money. Mike was the first player to buy a large building but didn't man it when he had the opportunity. Dan finished the game by filling his building area. Large buildings, Dan and Mike both had two, and Ralph had one. Dan was the last player in the round, which gave no one a chance to play the Mayor so only Dan had the large building bonus (fortress).
Dan (40), Me (37), Mike (31), Paul (28)
Union PacificMVGA: Initial shares: Mike and Ralph (Green), Paul (Yellow), and Dan (Red). Mike went overboard getting Union Pacific, while Ralph ignored it. Scoring round where evenly distributed. During the game, green control flopped between Mike and Dan, with Mike controlling it at the end of the game. Red control was mostly Dan's until the end when Ralph took it. Ralph also took control of yellow, which had been controlled by Paul. Ralph also controlled black and dominated blue. Mike shared gray with Paul and dominated orange. Dan had control of some of the smaller rails.
Mike (146), Dan (131), Me (124), Paul (112)
Kohle, Kies & KneteMVGA: In memorial to Sid Sackon, we played KK&K. First play for Mike, Ralph, Paul and possibly Dan. In the first few rounds, everyone just rolled the die and picked up cards. Dan started out strong getting a couple good deals in his pocket but his character was stolen and was never able to mount an adequate deal after that. Ralph stole Paul's character and because of his two character cards he was included in the last four winning deals. Game ended after the 14th deal.
Me (45), Rich (44), Mike (41), Walter (37), Paul (20s), Dan (20s)
8th
Eurphat & TigrisB20: One harsh game, I got two black tiles in the whole game, giving me almost no chance to win. Matt dominated in almost every conflict.
Matt (10), Rich (5), Dave F (5), Me (3)
Risk: Lord of the RingsB20: Broke in Dave's copy of the game. Dave started out strong and as a result every one ganged up on him. I was only able to complete one mission. During his final turn Nick as able to gobble up lots of Dave's territories. I controlled 3 of the strongholds, which allowed me to be within 3 pt of the leader otherwise I would have been behind by a lot.
Nick (20), Dave F (19), Constantine (18), Me (17)
Princes of FlorenceB20: Felt like I played by best game of Princes. Finished five works but paid too much for the forest. I was one work short of winning.
Rich (59), Dave F (57), Adam (52), Me (48), Nick (42)
Mystery Rummy 1: Jack the RipperB20: While we waited for games to finish, Nick and I played MR1.
Nick (85), Me (78)
Tonga BungaB20: This was Kyle and Nick's first play. Started out slow but took a different route than most, choosing to go the opposite direction. Once I was close the fourth island, my offers for the dice were at minimum. Nick finished the race but I had the most money.
Me (144), Nick (137), Kyle (111), Scott (77)
Where's Bob's Hat?B20: Final game of the night was a standard trick taking game. I started out well but I failed to get my last five bid correct.
Dave F (50), Brian (48), Me (0), Jim (-23)
11th
Mamma MiaLunch Time: Tim's first play. I was the first round Mamma Mai, which allowed me to fill my Bomastica pizza.
Me (8), Dimitri (5), Holly (3), Tim (2)
12th
Trans AmericaLunch Time: Regina needed a Trans America fix. Regina won first hand but everyone was close to finishing. Dimitri finished the second hand and I was five away from my cities. We were playing the short version of the game so the end of the game two away from my spot which is 4. I finished the next hand, which allowed for another turn. Craig finished the last hand but wasn't able to knock dimitri from his lead.
Dimitri (9), Craig (7), Regina (2), Me (2)
Settlers of Catan: City and KnightsOnline: Lloyd started out fast due to lucky rolls. I got on a roll and built 3 additional settlements, two of which were upgraded to cities. I played road building and it started to look like I was going to win. James then stole my level 2 knights, longest road and built a science metro. Helen then had a burst building several cities and a trade metro. I had another burst, built two more settlements, grabbed longest road and played the trader card. Game ended on my 12th turn.
Me (13), Helen (9), James (9), Lloyd (8), John (7)
Carcassone: Hunter and GatherersOnline: This was Helen's first try. I got hosed big time in this game; three of my meeple were on items that never completed. Hard to score points with limited meeples. The only thing that helped score point was I was able to get Stonehenge. I spent most of my time after that growing the Stonehenge meadow.
paradox99 (105), lloyd (79), helen (72), me (68)

CarcassonneLunch Time: Regina and I shared a 30 pointer. Dimitri completed a cathedral city for 18 points.
Me (115), Regina (98), Craig (90), Dimitri (67)
Trans AmericaAl's: While food was cooking we played a quick game of Trans America. Rich finished the last hand quickly and causing AL to end the game after three rounds.
Rich (8), Me (4), Tofu (3), Maria (1), Al (-4)
Mamma MiaAl's: While waiting for Chris to show up, I taught the group this Pizza making game. Tufo seems to understand the game. I took advantage of the miscalculations and create 7 pizzas.
Me (7), Tufo (5), Maria (3), Rich (1), Al (1)
CarcassonneAl's: Chris finally showed up and had a strong desire to play Carcassonne. Tufo was out of control, helping create and finish lots of cities, and ignoring farming.
Tufo (107), Al (79), Me (78), Rich (73), Chris (64), Maria (56)
CarcassonneAl's: One play wasn't enough for the group so we played another game of Carcassonne. This time Tufo and his dad spent the game trying to hose each other. Chris had some misplayed tiles, that kept most of his meeples on objects that never got completed.
Maria (68), Me (65), Rich (49), Tufo (44), Al (31), Chris (21)
Groo The GameAl's: Rich and Tofu went of to play on the XBOX. Taught Chris, Maria and Al this quick little game. Weird game very few troops came out and Al was able to complete the building object.
Al
Groo The GameAl's: Tried another game of Groo, had the same problem as the previous game, not enough troops. Maybe I'm missing some troop cards. Hmmmm.
Chris
Wyatt EarpAl's: Maria's fist time. This was a regular lunch game for Al and I when we worked together. Maria picked it up quickly and took us to school.
Maria (33), Al (27), Me (22)
14th
Carcassone: Hunter and GatherersDanger Planet: Vitas bought the game. First time for most except for me since I've been playing it on BSW. Jeff hadn't even played the original. I warned people not to play hunters too early. Karl ignored me and started hunting early. Cindy finished plenty of forests with gold for the extra tile placement. I picked up a couple of meadows with my hunters at the end of the game.
Cindy (83), Me (78), Vitas (71), Karl (66), Jeff (61)
DeadwoodDanger Planet: This is a game where you are a 2-bit actor at the Deadwood Studios. Objective is to make the most money during four days of shooting. Each day you can move or roll for a scene. If you move into a room with a scene in progress you can decide to join a scene as an extra or as an actor. If you're an extra you roll the die and score a dollar (scale). If you're an actor you roll but only make money when the scene has wrapped. The amount of money made as an actor is based on the position of the roll and budget of the movie. If an actor wraps a scene that player gets full credit for the roll. If an extra wraps the scene, the player gets 1/2 a credit. If an extra wraps the movie while a player is in an actor position the players actor is upstaged by the extra and loses acting value (1-6). Players can move their tokens to the casting office and trade in their credits and money to upgrade there acting values. Person with he most money at the end of the 4th day wins the game.
Me (83), Cindy (58), Vitas (44)
Carcassone: Hunter and GatherersDanger Planet: New games bring out the gamers. Doug and Jimmie were excited for the first play. Doug and Jimmie listened to my advice on early hunting. Tried to get my fishing hut merged with Jimmie's network but both attempts were diverted into useless paths. At the end of the game I create a nice meadow with many animals.
Me (95), Doug (89), Vitas (83), Jimmie (78)
15th
CarcassonneLunch Time: Craig and Dimitri once again spend lots of time whacking each out, while I spent most of my time growing a nice 6-city farm.
Me (99), Regina (74), Dimitri (67), Craig (65)
Puerto RicoIlise's: Game night at Ilise's. John and Ilise needed a Puerto Rico fix. Annette and Matt's first play. I had first position and went for the trader strategy picking up the small market, office and coffee roaster. Ilise went for the shipping strategy going heavy in indigo and tobacco production, and got the harbor/wharf combo. John went for the factory moneymaking strategy and it performed well. Annette tried the corn strategy and diversity a bit by getting heavy in indigo. I bought the customhouse, residence and guildhall. Matt got the fortress, which really helped cause he had plenty of colonists.
Matt (48), John (46), Me (43), Annette (43), Ilise (43)
Big CityIlise's: First play for Ilise and John. I've played this city building game, which I found to be better with three players. With five players it was difficult to get enough cards to build a big building to get a huge score. I concentrated in building the streetcar to my areas and build the special buildings.
Me (57), Annette (55), Ilise (55), John (44), Matt (31)
CarcassonneIlise's: Everybody wanted to play a game they already knew, so we decided on Carcassonne. People started to farm early. I waited till the mid game to start farming my own areas. It was late and I don't remember much.
Me (93), Matt (89), Ilise (85), John (58), Annette (58)
Mamma MiaAl's: Introduced this game to the gang. Maybe it was too late to teach a new game cause people had a hard time picking it up. We play open hand for teaching purposes. Ilise got the mamma mia card both times, which helped her in getting 6 pizzas.
Ilise (6), John (4), Me (2), Annette (1), Matt (1)

CarcassonneCraigs's: Stopped by Craig's house to pick up my computer. Craig and Cheryl were interested in play a game of carcassonne. Ended up having an impromptu game session. A very friendly game. Both catherdal cities were finished, a 30 pointer and a whopping 66 pointer. Farming was very balanced.
Me (163), Craig (150), Cheryl (131)
Wyatt EarpCraigs's: Broke in Craig's copy of Wyatt. Cheryl's first play. The last hand was a big battle between Craig and I.
Craig (33), Me (32), Cheryl (21)
BohnanzaCraigs's: Played this trading game in which I got very lucky. I got all garden beans and red beans early.
Me (24), Cheryl (21), Craig (19)
18th
CarcassonneLunch Time: Got catherdaled early and was able to finish it for 27 points. Complete a twenty point road too. Shared a 9 city farm with dimitri and shared a 5 city farm with scott and craig.
Me (125), Craig (112), Scott (111), Dimitri (110)
19th
CarcassonneLunch Time: Friendly game again. The three of us completed a catherdal city for 39 points. There was a three way time for 9 cities.
Craig (189), Me (187), Regina (133)
Settlers of Catan: City and KnightsOnline: One ugly day for me. The five just rolled and rolled and I had no fives. Helen and John battled for longest road. Helen finally won by taking the longest road and the trader. First game in a long time with no metros.
Game ended turn 17
Helen (13), James (10), John (9),Me (7)

Purchase: Finally got my Adam Spielt order; Union Pacific (10 bucks) and Carcassone Hunters and Gatherers
21st
Purchase: Finally got my used game auction wins; Bluff, Heimlich & Co , and Medici
Lord of the RingsMVGA: Played the base game. Were able to proceed through most of the scenarios with out major problems. The final action cause Sauron to move down the corruption line and kill Merry and Frodo. Pippen rolled for the victory, final score 72. Me (Merry), Anton (Fatty), Rich (Frodo), Paul (Pippen), Walter (Sam).
Destroyed the ring but Merry and Frodo died.
Puerto RicoMVGA: Try the contruction hut, hacienda combo to fill up my planation area but couldn't get enough money to score the residence. Dan has the hospice so he picked the fortress and guild halls for his big buildings. Walter had the residence and custom house. Anton had the other big building but it didn't matter. To Paul's dismay, I placed every colonist into my plantation area to force the end of the game. Paul a large corn/indigo load and plenty of open boats.
Walter (58), Dan (54), Me (43), Anton (41), Paul (39)
Princes of FlorenceMVGA: This time I picked up my prestige and bonus cards early. I had the "All three landscapes" Prestige card, so I passed on getting builders. This really hurt cause I had to buy buildings at full price. Unlike my previous time I had four seperate buildings to build. I won the final two Enticement cards so I could build two more works. My final work lacked a building but I got a 6 point bonus cards. Shocked Dan with my final burst.
Me (58), Dan (57), Rich (55), Paul (54), Walter (51)
AcquireMVGA: When the gang found out that I had never played Acquire they wouldn't let me leave without playing it. The game is pretty simple, it's a 12 x 9 grid in which tile are place during the game. This tiles represent hotels that grow in size. Eventually some will merge, that's where the leader (sharewise) get money and players have the opportunity of selling shares for money. The winner is the one with the most money, cash and networth.
I got lucky and was able to grow a chain quickly. It merge with another and made more money. Walter and Paul weren't as lucky with there tile draws. Eventually ended up with four chains.
Rich (57), Me (53), Walter (46.5), Paul (17.5)
22nd
Call My BluffB20: Campbell, Adam, Ben, Scott, Matt and I started the night with a game of bluff and I sucked. I was knocked out in two turns.
Carcassone: Hunter and GatherersB20: Ben and I had played before everyone else was a newbie. Dave started out hunting alla orginal Carcassonne and paid for it. Ben by far got the luckiest draws.
Ben (94), Me (75), Dave F (68), Gregg (63), Dave B (42)
MuscatB20: Ben was hot for a game of Muscat, no one else put up any suggestions so we played. I started out strong getting several of my entertainers to the 2nd level quickly. Ben used that to skip his guys to the third level. Ben and Dave F got two more guys (20 pts) to the highest level than Brian and I did, which made the difference in the game.
Dave F (60), Ben (58), Me (45), Brian (41)
TraumfrabikB20: Rich was in the Traum mode since Thursday. I hoarded money in the first round by winning no bids. In the third round I decided to build the best green movie but it didn't pay off cause I was outbidded for my winning tile. Only completed three movies and got no awards.
Kyle (69), Rich (67), Evan (61), Me (48), Paul (48)
Modern ArtB20: I was heading out but was inticed to play a game I've nevered played before. This is an auction game. I had trouble initially understanding the estimated price for the items. The value of the pictures are based on the popularity the pictures in this round plus any value from the previous rounds. I definately over bids several times.
Evan (460), Rich (440), Me (423), Dave F (300s), Paul (200s)

Call My BluffChris's: Introductory game for Todd and Rob. Play two games, the first for the new players to get a feel of the game.
Todd, Chris, Me, Rob
Chris, Me, Rob, Todd
Heimlich & CoChris's: While we waited for maria we played this quick deduction game. Todd guess one player correctly, everyone else whiffed.
Me (42), Rob (31), Chris (28), Todd (21)
Carcassone: Hunter and GatherersChris's: Game started out quick. I compelete several forest to get the special tiles. Chris got the forest fire tile and used that to secure a very nice meadow. I sneaked into it a couple of turns later. It looked like we were going to share a very nice meadow but he got another hunter in. I tried but couldn't get the right tile to get another of my hunters in. Maria scored a nice 16 point forest at the end of the game.
Maria (74), Todd (69), Chris (68), Me (62), Rob (55)
ShowmanagerChris's: Part of Chris's wish to play list, so I broke in my copy which I had bought many moons ago. I explained the rules to everyone. I completed my Wolf production for an above average score but I had to borrow from it. Chris produced a nice King Lear and placed it on New York. Todd and I beat his score by one point which caused him to lose 10 vps, it really irked him.
Maria (48), Me (44), Rob (44), Chris (43), Marcus (25), Todd (17)
Robo RallyChris's: Created a two tile (Cross, Exchange), three flaged race. Rob and I got off to great start but Rob made a wrong rotation during the second turn and fell into a pit. Once I got to the second flag it was a cruise to the third flag. Meanwhile there was plenty of chaos behind me. Todd was whacking Rob, but Todd made a programming mistake finished on the edge of the board on a outgoing conveyor belt. Rob had several registers locked but wasn't about to shutdown. Marcus push Chris off the board, upsetting Chris.
Me, Todd, Marcus, Rob, Chris
Call My BluffChris's: Final game of the night. Rob got knocked out quick when he called on 6 stars and there were 10. Yikes! Everyone else was whittled away 1 die at a time. I had three dice left at the end.
Me, Todd, Chris, Rob
24th
Carcassone: Hunter and GatherersChris's: First play for Ilise and John. I started out quick, completing several forest quickly. I got stonehenge early but Ilise and John locked me out. I eventually stalled and they caught up. I did some quick hunting at the end for some bonus points.
Me (129), Ilise (113), John (101)
Puerto RicoMVGA: 2nd position. Started out growing indigo and corn but everyone else was too. I got into tobacco and coffee for money. I picked up a factory but the game finsihed before it became cost effective. John was the only one to get a big building, the guild hall for an 8 point bonus.
John (42), Me (32), Ilise (25)
26th
Carcassone: Hunter and GatherersLunch Time: First play for Craig and Dimitri. We all shared on a 16 point fishing network. I shared a 12 point meadow with Craig and a 30 pointer with Dimitri. Still not enough to win.
