Memoir 44

BGoR: Visited Mike at his ice cream parlor for a couple of games of Memoir 44. We selected the St Lo scenario from the Game Trader magazine. I took command of the US forces for the first game. I decided to make my main thrust on the right side of the board since I had 2 set of tanks, an engineer squad and a few infantry units and there were two victory marks in the vicinity. Sadly my tanks were almost useless against infantry in forest/hedgerows but my engineer was great for that. While I battled on the right flank, Mike moved his troops from the center up to the front. I had done a good job of reducing his flank with little damage to my troops. I was one kill way from winning but then the card draws turn towards Mike's favor. He was able to counter attack with his tanks against my infantry in the open field. Most of my remaining cards were for the center where I only had three units. It was close but Mike got the victory. We tried St Lo again, this time I was the German forces. Mike tried attacking on the left flank. The draw (river) funneled his troops into my killing zone. I got lucky and got the artillery barrage card and hammered his attacking units. He gave up the left flank attack and started doing right flank attacks. I chopped him up there too.

Transamerica

Sacto Meetup: We had three new persons who had never played any Euros before, so Kevin broke out Transamerica as the introductory game. I gave everybody a good whalop during the first turn, most people lost five points. Marty picked up the game and finished first in the following turns to win quite handly! With more people around, Kevin broke off to play some heavier games. I stayed with the Mary and the three noobies and helped them play Settlers of Catan.

Traumfabrik

Sacto Meetup: After two hours of Catan, I pulled out a couple games that were easy enough for beginners, Wizard and Traumfabrik. Traum got the play since it was more "boardgamish" by the newbies, a most excellent choice if I do say so myself. The newbies did well.

Carcassone The Castle

Sacto Meetup: Played two games of Carc the City. I got really luck on both games. The first game I used to a tower doubler tile to score 44 points and the I scored the Keep bonus points of 15 points. The second game was a little closer but I got the tile I needed on the last draw.

Power Grid Italy/France

Sacto Meetup: Kevin broke out his new map of Power Grid. I start west of Paris but I don't remember how won. All I know is the guys were surprised that I was able to build my last four cities to end the game. There were plenty of nukes rods in the game. I wonder if there should have been more nuke power planets in the mix.

Alhambra

Sacto Meetup: Last game of the night. Boy, this turned out to be a horrible game. I scored no points in the first round. I made a strong comeback but I couldn't achieved any first place majorities. Score very little wall ponts since my wall were very framented. Kevin on the other hand got several first place majorites and formed a very large wall chain. He ran away with it.

Titan

Home: Cody and Jake wanted to give Titan another try. Oh boy two plays of Titan this year, I'm in heaven!! We got Evan to give it a try. The game got off to a slow start for Cody. He had some really bad luck mustering creatures. Eventually he made a suicidal attack and got knocked out. Jake went on the war path and took out Evan. During this time I created several monster stacks. I had Snakes, Behemoths, Griffins and Unicorns. My titan stack had Dragons and Giants. Eventually I used on off those nasty stacks to knock out Jake.

Fairy Tale

BGoR: We gave fairy tale a try. I went over the rules and tried to explain some of the symbols on the cards. Nate and Tin were throughly confused. We gave it a shot anyway. I really expected there would be more flipping and unflipping of card but most everybody went for points. The game definately will take a couple of plays to get used to. Biggest problem was the art and the symbols.

Too Many COoks

BGoR: Anne brought this to the session. I remember playing it once a few years ago but we had to read the rules. We did get the first round wrong forgetting to that once a pepper suit is played any suit is playable. We played on four round before we called it a game.

Hacienda

BGoR: I played this last week and I really loved it. I played it again today and it retained the enjoyment factor. It's a must get. This time I played the land tiles a little better but somehow I fell behind again. I figure that connect more hacienda would work better and I got eight. Sadly everybody else connect just as much but somehow got more stuff done. This game is still eluding me, maybe that is why I love it.

Roborally

BGoR: Played a two board, three flag race. Mike got the Short Curcuit card as a starting option, which auto shutdown your robot when it gets three points of damage. I instantly told Mike to take it as his first hit. He ignored me. He did get rid of it eventually but only after the three consectutive shutdowns. I lucked out with a bad first draw getting a backup, a forward and all turns. This kept me behind the mayhem which I added to, of course. During the subsequent rounds, I was able to rush forward, touch the first flag and get out of the second wave of mayhem. I cruised to the second and third flags while the rest were trying to touch flag one. I finished and no one else was close to the second flag. I should suggest my shield variant next time.

MR 4: Al Capone

Cody: We gave MR4 a play while we waited for the rest to arrive. We played seven hands before achieving the winning score. We figured that we still didn't have the strategy figured out yet cause neither of us ever completed a set. Cody did some nasty plays with the "Agent meeting" card will definately remember that for the next game.

Power Grid

Cody: Played Power Grid with a bunch of first timers. Being that I was the only experience played I made sure that I was always in first to give myself a disadvantage for resource and city buildings. I dropped the hint of where the good placement would be but I guess they Ignored me. WIth the Southeast region exclued, Cody choose to start in San Diego, Buddy in New Orleans, Evan in Chicago, Lisa in Omaha and I took New York. With no opponents in the East Coast I exploded in city growth. The game was kind of thrown off when Lisa left about half way through the game. We reduced the resource production but nothing to reduce city sites. Evan benifted the most by Lisa departure as he was able to expand cheaply. The game end with Evan and I powering fifteen cities but I had more cash.

Railroad Tycoon

Cody: Taught another game, at least Cody had played this once before. I won the start player with a bid of one. I made sure I got the first delivery bonus. After that I concentrated on building in the Northeast. Buddy started in the Pittsburgh area, Evan in the Savanah and cody was in the Lexington area. I got a huge lead when I was able to make the first three link connection for a 3 point bonus and built the first 4 link train for four more points. I scored about 5 six link runs to pad my score even more. Cody caught a break and make a Richmond/Atlanta connection for an eight point bonus. Seeing that I had a big lead, I made sure to rush the end of the game buy emptying cities of their goods. Nobody score any personality bonus points.

Industrial Waste

Home: I played this game once back in July 2003. It had been soon long that I had forgotten the rules. John had played this recently so he went over there rules for Harry and I. Once we started Harry and I worked at increasing our factory level while John used tech reduction cards to reduce his work force.
