So where exactly is Springfield? Matt Groening once said that the reason 'Springfield' was chosen to be the hometown of the Simpson's was because it is such a common city name.

But which Springfield do the Simpson's live in? Here are some clues to help work it out...

1. Listen to Herbert Powell when he purchases his train ticket to Springfield in "Brother Can You Spare Two Dimes."
2. Notice that Homer's driver's license reads: Springfield, NT 49007.
3. Locate states that enforce capital punishment by electrocution, such as in "Bart the Murderer."
4. Remember that Springfield has its own international airport.
5. Homer's social security number is 568-47-0008. Social security numbers that begin with 568 are typically issued in California.
6. Note whether patterns in Springfield: snow, sunshine, floods.
7. Search for a state that boasts a large gorge, such as in "Bart the Daredevil."
8. Note the family drove to Detroit, Michigan in one week in "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?"
9. Spanish conquistadors were spotted in the Rancho Relaxo area.
10. Springfield has its own docks and beach.

11. In the episode where Bart plays football (Homer is the coach), Hank Hill, whom we know lives in Arlene TX says, "We drove 2000 miles for this!"
12. In the episode in which the town is divided by an area code, the original area code is 636, which is in MO, and the new area code is 939, which is in NY.
13. In the episode where we discover Principal Skinner is really Armand Tamzerian, he drives a very short distance to 'Capital City.' I believe he stated it was just down the road. Springfield NY is approx. the same distance to Albany, which may be the real 'Capital City.'

14. In one of the Halloween episodes (the one where we found out Maggie is an alien love child) Maggie sends wave signals into outer space for her alien father to hone in on. There is an art sequence that shows a zooming out effect from earth to space, and in a few of those frames it is clear that the waves are coming somewhere near Texas. Of course, in the Halloween specials you can't take anything to seriously, but it might be a clue anyway.

15. In the 'Behind the Laughter' episode, the narrator states "This North Kentuckian Family." Clue, or something more sinister??? It's stated toward the end of the episode, just before the "choking their son, or poking some fun" quote.

16. In Illinois, there is a Shelbyville next to Springfield.

17. Springfield has a huge mountain nearby called "The Murderhorn."
18. One of the only Springfields in the country (possibly the only) with a nuclear power plant is Springfield Illinois, although that is the capital of Illinois and the Simpsons have driven to Capital City on numerous occasions, so that can't be it.

19. I have a suggestion as to where Springfield is.  Shelbyville, Springfield's rival city, is an actual city in MO near Springfield.  And, when Grampa Simpson is asked why there are only 49 stars on the American flag in one episode, he answers, "I'll be damned if I count Missouri."

20. In "Sweet and Sour Marge", when Homer is asked to smuggle sugar SOUTH OF THE BORDER, Homer responds "You mean Tennessee?", thinking they mean statewise.  And Kentucky shares most of Tennessee's northern border.

21. Springfield should be west of the Mississippi because radio stations with call signs that begin with "K", such as KBBL or KJAZ, are generally located West of the Mississippi, while ones that begin with "W" are usually found east of the Mississippi.
22. An actual station called KBBL is located in western Arkansas. This may be the location of the Springfield that the Simpsons live in.

23. Three things to add to the Kentucky case: 1 Springfield, KY and Shelbyville, KY are less than 25 miles apart; 2 They are both close to Frankfort, Kentucky's "Capital City"; 3 Both are close to neighbouring Simpsonville, KY.
24. The Michigan case is supported by the fact that both Springfield, MI and Shelbyville, MI are very close to Kalamazoo, MI 49007.

25. In the trillion dollar bill episode Mr. Burns flies to Europe and Cuba in two seperated flights but each time in only one plane. It also says outside the airport that Springfield is the birthplace of the Wind Shear.
26. In an episode where Marge is giving her address over the phone she says, "Evergreen Terrace, Springfield O-HI Maud" because Maud Flanders walked into the room.
