Halok the Guard

You take the eastern road. As you progress, the glow becomes steadily brighter, and the stench more putrid until you block it out completely.

Moria, Road, Before The Ebony Door

This is a standard passage within Moria, a Road. The passage is about eleven feet high and the same distance wide. The glow from beyond the Ebony Door shows the passage to be topped by flat slabs of granite. The corridor walls are similarly composed of smoothed slabs of redstone. The air is warm, damp, and slightly musty. There is no noise but that which you make. Blackness gives way to the flickering glow which leaks from around the seal of the Ebony Door to the east... A rush of hot air also escapes from the room beyond the door.

Obvious exits:

Oaken Door, Ebony Door, and West

You approach the Ebony Door, grasp the black iron pull ring, and fling wide the door. Streaming light and heat flee past you as you walk through the unsealed valve.

The door closes behind you.

Lair Of The Balrog, Front-Chamber

The heights of this massive abode first capture your attention:

Six giant vaults compose the 120' high ceiling. Adorned with mithril and gold, their arches support a surface of clear glass that looks up into a natural fissure, one forever illuminated with dancing blue light. There, huge gas-fires fill hundreds of terraced ledges, all marching toward the roof of the great chasm, 640' above.

Your gaze drops down from this twinkling but ominous scene to the fire-lit 600' by 300' throneroom. Here, the Balrog holds court. Six wide pools of flowing lava fill the chamber from the west to the east. Arching red glass bridges span these pools. Each is carved in the form of a fallen lord and is representative of the tortured Free Peoples laid to rot in the pits of the Demon-king.

Garj approaches the Ebony door from down the long road. He shows sign of discomfort, though whether it be from the heat of the halls or the vicinity to the Balrog's lair, it is not known. As he approaches and nears the form in front of the door, he makes out Halok. "Greetings Halok. I have come to see if that one from Goblin Town managed to speak with the Balrog, and if the news he spoke of was good enough to allow him to leave this place.

Halok suddenly turns cold. His eyes race across the hallway as his mind churns at full gear to produce a visual image of the intruder who Garj mentions. It's hardly a moment before he retakes control of his nerves, and his agitation quells impressively. Evidently, there's no cause for alarm. "That rat? I sent him back out the door after he stepped a foot inside." Then, with dubious casualty, he retorts, "Now who are you to sneak in here? Get out, unless you've got business with me." His burly hand strays near his spear.

Garj appears even more concerned due in part to the eccentricities of Halok, whom he thought a rational being. "Er, uh yes actually. I do have business with you. I came down to verify that Zogoth managed to complete his quest, but now that I see you, it spurs another question. I have need for training in the bow. I realize that this is not a good time, but I was wondering if we could arrange a session at some time...By the way, is the Balrog really just behind those black doors?"

Halok is taken aback, but he doesn't allow himself to be overwhelmed by skepticism. He ignores choice phrases of Garj's, and responds with dutiful tact, "I'm game for a showing of my bow. I'll not waste any good arrows on it. As for the Master." His eyes slide across the room; at that particular moment, a gust of steamy air gushes from the crack under the door and reaches with its warm tendrils around Halok and Garj. He chooses then to only glare suggestively at the Orc. His rather menacing air diminishes in the presence of his own fear.

Garj tries to ignore the eddying of hot air around his ankles and the perceived movement behind the door, attempting instead to focus on the Uruk's words. "Perhaps we could schedule a time in a few days for a look at your bow and it's workings." Garj continues to try and look around the orc to see what dreadful sights may lie behind the door, and wonders if she really eats most of her visitors. Garj begins to worry less about Halok's apparent nervousness, as he must serve duty here just outside the door of ungodly terrors. "Er, I, uh shoud be getting going soon, is, uhh, there anything else you may need me to bring?"

Halok says with burgeoning vivacity, "Bring what you can find, but don't get caught stealing anything! You'll likely lose your head. Be smart about it." Halok finds himself reveling in Garj's terror. His pleasure exists while soaking in the evil malice of his Master, and he, in turn, brings it to bear against Garj. The intensity of the room strains against the stone walls, thickening and swirling in a mist of tremendous pressure and evil bearing. Halok is able to stand tall against it, as a vassal that lets tension pour forth.

Garj looks around the room desperately wanting the wide outdoors. A bead of sweat rolls down into his eye causing a burning that results in Garj blinking furiously. "With all this heat, I'm suprised you don't cook like an elfsteak. I think I will be g-g-getting back upstairs for some war, er cold ale. You care to come with or are you stuck down here?"
