1999-2000 Retrospective

Ballin' in Japan
The dawn of a fresh season brings new hope and new strength. Coming off a summer of playing for the USA Men's Basketball Team (qualifying rounds for the upcoming 2000 Olympics in Sydney), Kevin Garnett was still hungry for hoops. The Timberwolves, defeated by the eventual champion San Antonio in May 1999, had new blood on the team: Wally Szczerbiak. Still only 23 years old and already entering his fifth year, Garnett was still viewed by many as an up-and-coming young star. His 1998-1999 numbers were impressive (20.8pts, 10.4reb, 4.3ast, 1.77blk, 1.66stl), but he was just getting started. The Timberwolves began the 1999-2000 season in Japan, playing the Sacramento Kings in front of a Tokyo crowd - and neither team disappointed the fans, who were treated to two games. Kings won the first game, but the Timberwolves took the second. NBA is a global phenomenon, with fans all over. The league wanted to market its young stars. The Timberwolves and the Kings were two exciting teams who were on the rise. As for KG, his brilliance in Japan ignited the superb season that was to follow.
