Cavalry Saves: One of the most glaring problems with WAB is the fact that mounted figures improve their armor save. This is ahistorical, particularly for the Middle Ages where horses, especially unbarded ones, suffered at the hands of common archers. These optional rules attempt to rectify that problem.

When attacking cavalry figures with bowmen, roll to hit conventionally. However roll a further D6 in the result of a hit. If the result is a 4+, proceed as normal; if the result is a 3 or less, render all attacks against the mount. Each mount has W1 and a T3. Barding allows for a 5+ save.

Pavaises: The pavaise was an important piece of equipment for medieval soldiers, particularly for crossbowmen, hindered by the speed of reloading their weapon. A pavaise was simply a large, free-standing shield.

Any crossbow unit equipped with a pavaise may set it up if either they are drilled, or they expend half their movement only after they move (i.e. after setting up the pavaise they may not again move). A pavaise acts as a large shield for the model, rendering a +2  to all armor saves against archery. Against melee troops, it acts only as a normal shield, representing the bulky but immovable protection. All archers gain this save so long as they do not move or tear down the pavaise. Any unit that wishes to move again must expend half their movement to tear down the shield, except drilled units which can do so for free (so long as they do not employ any other drilled abilities).
