2nd Earl of Mar. Lord High Treasurer of Scotland. He was educated at Stirling Castle in company with King James VI who was seven years his junior (born 1666). He later married as his second wife Mary Stuart James VI's second cousin (their common ancestor was John Stuart 3rd Earl Lennox). Mary's father Esme first Duke of Lennox was James VI's closest relation, for some time next in line to the throne, whose influence reached its height after the execution of Morton 6th June 1681.
