Daisy At Graduation
The Gas City Dog Club is pleased to offer the classes in obedience and agility training as outlined below for dogs and their owners.
            All training is based on humane treatment of the dog and positive reinforcement methods.
            Instructors do not train the dog for you, the owner/handler, but teach you how to work with your dog to get the results              you want.
            All classes are conducted for 1 hour/week for 8 weeks and are offered 3-4 times per year depending on demand.
            For the safety and health of all the participants, the dog's vaccinations must be up to date prior to starting classes.
Registration fees from the classes are utilized to support club activities:
     Support for training of dogs rescued and adopted out by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(SPCA) & Save    Old Souls (SOS).
     Club/office expenses.
     Instructor Training & expenses
     Seminars.
     Resource library on dog training.
     UKC Licensed Obedience Trials.
Puppy Class
Prerequisite:
For puppies 3-5 months of age
Lessons covered
Socialization with other puppies and people

Coming when they are called

Walking on a leash without pulling

To sit & lie down when told

To stay for a short beriod of time

To listen to their owners
Other areas are also covered & questions are answered
All lessons are kept short & positive.
Puppies learn that listening & learning can be fun & rewarding.
What Next? After a puppy has completed the Puppy Class they can then go on to Level 1
Level 1 (Novice)
Prerequisite: For any dog 5 months & older
                     These classes are geared for older puppies & dogs and are faster moving than Puppy Classes.
                     There is more work time & less play time.
Lessons covered:

Some socializing with older dogs & people depending on class

To walk on a leash with out pulling & to sit when we stop.

To sit,lie down & stand on command

To hold a sit, down & stand stay

To work & listen with other dogs around

To come when called, sit in front & have collar touched

There are many other exercises covered in this class not listed.
What next? Dogs that complete this class can either repeat it to solidify the lessons learned or move on to Level 1Advanced(Advanced Novice)
Level 1 Advanced (Advanced Novice)
Prerequisite:
For any dog that has completed Level 1.  Get more control of your dog and gain confidence.  A fun class keeps you and your dog from getting bored.  If you want to participate in obedience trials, you will learn everything you need to compete in the Novice Class.
Lessons covered
Sharpens all lessons covered in Level 1

Longer stays (sit, down, & stand) with distractions

Start doing Rally Obedience (a series of fun turns & exercises)

Start learning how to train the dogs to go over a jump

Start doing recalls over the high jump

Off leash work
What Next?
Dogs completing this level can either repeat this class, go on to Level II or Agility
Level II (Open)
Prerequisite:
For dogs that have completed Level I Advanced or have earned a CD on their dog in an Obedience Trial.  Dogs will learn all the exercises needed to compete in the Open Class at an Obedience trial.  It may take several times through this class to gain good retrieving needed too compete.  If not interested in competition, this training will give more challenge and fun for you and your dog.

Teach the broad jump exercise

Teach the dog to retrieve on the flat & over the high jump

Practice the "stays" with the handler out of sight

Learn more Rally Obedience exercises

Drop on recall
What next?
Dogs who have successfully completed this class & who have  good retrieving skills can then go to Level III or Agility
Level III (Utility)
Prerequisite:
For dogs that have completed Level II, have earned a CDX title or have good retrieving skills.  Dogs learn all the exercises needed to compete at the Utility level at trials.  Even if not interested in competition, this is a fun class that will be sure to challenge the best dogs.

Scent discrimination

Hand signal exercises

Directional jumping

Glove exercises
What next?
Dogs who earn their Utility title can then go on to earn their OCH (Obedience Championship).  Handlers who have achieved this level with their dog may want to go on to qualify as a UKC Obedience Judge.
Introduction to Agility
Prerequiste:
For dogs that have completed Level I Advanced.  Handlers must be able to control their dogs.  Dogs must be of sound body, have good joints and muscle tone.
Lessons covered:
Emphasis will be on control, safety & fun

Will learn the proper way to enter & exit an obstacle

Learn obstacles, jumps and other exercises (dog walk, weave poles, tire jump, various high jumps, table and tunnels)

WILL GIVE YOU THE BASICS OF WHAT AGILITY IS ALL ABOUT.
What next?
Many people feel that their dogs would love to do agility, now is th time to find out.
