Georgetown American School Profile

The Georgetown American School is a small N/K-12 unit school located in Georgetown, Guyana, South America. The school is Guyana's only accredited and only international school and provides an American type education option for local and international students resident in Guyana.

The school was founded in 1971 as a part of the worldwide network of U.S. State Department assisted overseas schools. The school was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1998 and meets or exceeds all the standards set by the accrediting organization. The school is also committed to continuing school improvement and each year evolves a school improvement plan. The improvement plan is based on a review of the progress achieved vis à vis the goals of the previous year's plan together with the results of a community wide needs assessment conducted every year.

The curriculum follows the US model in terms of approach and teaching practice, but includes a deliberate Guyanese and international content. Course offerings in the high school are limited due to the size of the school., but the needs of the student body are taken into account. In the 11th and 12th grades courses are offered with an AP option.

Although the school does not have a selective admissions policy, standardized test results (IOWA and SAT) are generally and consistently above US norms.

Students fulfilling the school's graduation requirements leave the Georgetown American School with a US High School Diploma. Nearly all the school's graduates enter university in the United States, Canada, or Europe. Many go on to do advanced degrees.
