GAT·ROT is composed of the following noise addicts: Charlie Touseull, vocals; Ruben Valdez, vocals; Clay Reed, drums; Gabe Garcia, guitar; and Boise Acedo, bass.
GAT·ROT was originally formed in March of 1995, at the request of a friend to play at a party he was going to throw in a few weeks. The band quickly learned some cover songs, and wrote four originals, three of which are on the band's first demo tape. The party went over pretty well, and the band (called Channel Zero at the time) decided to play out more and record. The demo was recorded and mixed by Jim Pavett at Allusion studios in May of '95. The band went through a brief period of instability, and took a few months away from each other. This period of time sucked, and the noise-fest was resumed. During the bands reformation they changed their name and acquired an additional lead vocalist, Ruben, to enhance the frontal vocal assault that delivers the hard-core message of gat-rot.
Lyrically GAT·ROT likes to attack those issues that they come in contact with on a daily basis. Living in the third most violent state in the nation (according to a recent study), GAT·ROT does not lack inspiration or topics to lyrically address. The song "Terror-zona" is about the condition of the stage the band lives in and the problems an ever growing population faces with in a far too conservative political atmosphere. "Another headline story so reflective of today/About the rage of race/in this crowded urban stage/So many people and not enough space/I I took a hit off of society/And I wanna hit somebody!". 1ManH8Machine is the bands own anthem "My country 'tis of thee/Bitter land of hostility/ At thee I scream/ L and where my fathers lied/ Land where natives die/ From every mountain side prejudice stings".
GAT·ROT is a band that loves to play out, and does so as often as it can. They have a reputation for putting on an extremely energetic show when playing out. They have played extensively throughout Tucson and the Phoenix area, and are starting to develop a strong and loyal following. A brief list of venues includes: the Electric Ballroom, the Mason Jar, the Nile, the Rock, Curves Cabaret, I.F.M. sk8 Park, and Rondstadt Transit Center. Thus far gat-rot has had the honor for opening for such nation acts as the Dimestore Hoods, EYEHATEGOD, and Stuck Mojo. They look forward to every show, and respect all of the bands they share venues with.
GAT·ROT has been met with different forms of musical prejudice during its existence. When playing with "punk" bands, they say it's too metal, when playing out with "metal" bands they say it's too rap, and independent label called the demo tape "too heavy". On the flipside, a review in the Zia zine (AZ) complimented the band for it's "diversity and aggression". Musical categorization is something the band really is annoyed with. At every attempt to describe their sound, the band becomes flustered having to say they sound like this or that. It's hard to define the "style" of music when everyone in the band has different musical backgrounds and tastes. Their style, flavor and sound is gat-rot!
GAT·ROT looks forward to a positive future of recording a full length CD, touring, playing out as much as possible, and just having a good time writing and playing their music for anyone willing to listen.
Oh, in case you were wondering, gat-rot is a term coined by GAT·ROT to explain what society has leftover after every senseless violent act committed on this nation's cold, uncaring, always forgetting, never forgiving streets.
Peace out!
