DOUBLE DRAGON 2

Official Site

This sequel to the first Double Dragon GameBoy game can only possibly be better. If you like Final Fight or Streets of Rage, you should definitely consider picking this up.

Gameplay:
This, like the first Double Dragon, is a one or two player (with link-cable) side-scrolling beat-em-up for the GameBoy.
The fact that you can perform multiple martial arts moves against the enemy is cool. For example you can stomp them when they're down, uppercut, grab them and smack 'em up a bit, kick them in the head, crunch their neck, plus more! The A button punches, while the B button kicks. When using a mixture of these two buttons, you can make your own combos!
Like most games of this type, it gets a bit tiring mashing the buttons (and some thugs face!), and some may get sick of the moves after doing them over and over again. Another downer, you can't use the enemies weapons anymore! It was very disapointing to see one of the great features go :(

Graphics:
Very nice detailed Japanese style backgrounds. It looks pretty damned good on the GBC also. Like the first Double Dragon the game could have used a few more enemies. At least the characters all have distinguishable martial arts moves and attacks.
I gotta tell you, the subway levels look pretty shmick. And the levels on the bridge look good as well. In fact, all of the levels look very nice. Occaionally some of the level backgrounds repeated themselves a bit much, but overall there was nice variation in the design.

Sound:
As most of you know, Technos Japan can churn out some great music. The music is really good, consisting of a number of addictive "stick-in-your-head" tunes. The sound effects are pretty average, consisting of a few simple *swish* and *thud* sounds. Nothing to special.

Controls:
The controls are well done making the moves easy to perform, this gives you the upper hand against the masses of thugs. The game is made up of three main areas with their own levels. Some of levels are a bit repetative but most of the time the following level will be quite unique. It's heaps more fun with a second player.
Uppercuts can be difficult to pull-off and they never seem to work when need the most.

Final Comments:
If you liked the original Double Dragon on Game Boy, 1. see a psychyatrist, and 2. check out his game. It is a thousand times better than the original, except you can't pick up weapons. Also if your a "beat-em-up" fan, then chance has it you will like this game. If it's going cheap give it a try!
