Your mission: Infiltrate the heavy guarded fortress Galuade and destroy"Metal Gear"! Directly derived from the PlayStation version, Metal GearSolid for GBC has the same feel in a smaller format. Do not underestimate the GameBoy Color's capabilities. Konami have used the GBC to it's peak, and the result is a great game with a very professional edge. If you want weapons, you want this game!
Gameplay:
If you've played it on PlayStation then it's worth a look at, if your new then it's about time you got to know the masterpiece of gaming. Snooping around a topsecret base, riddled with enemy guards takes not only skill but also anarsenal of weapons and enough items for any difficult situation. This is where this game excels...
Weapons include:
Five-seveN -pistol
C4 -plastic explosive (remote detonated)
R5 -automatic rifle
GRENADE -throw and run!
MINE -land mines
NIKITA -guided missile (this is awesome!)
plus more!
Items include:
Rations -food for health
Key Cards -to enter locked areas
Mine detector -to stay in one piece
Fogger -emits smoke so lasers become visible
Infra-Red Goggles -night vision, cool!
Gas Mask -very handy
The levels progressively get harder as you go, and believe me when I say hard I mean HARD! (This got a little frustrating sometimes, it really makes you use your brain.) So be prepared to spend a lot of time in order to finish all six levels (when completed new missions for each level appear). Enemies include: Guards, Attack Dogs, 4 bosses (mercenaries), birds in a way because they fly off when scared, this can often give away your position, plus there are surveillance cameras, robot automatic guns, gas, and a few other surprises!
Graphics:
Very Smooth, very clear. The game is set in a top isometric view, this is very handy when navigating your way around the levels. In terms of characters, the sprites are very detailed and precise. This means you can easily judge where their line of vision is. Amazingly when Solid Snake runs his bandanna sways from side to side! The each level design is quite a bit different from the others. The designs are excellently suited with clear, detailed graphics that makes identifying objects quite easy. The screen scrolls very smooth and logically so you can see around yourself pretty well.
Sound:
The music is a typical suspenseful spy tune that adds so much in terms of atmosphere to the game. When spotted by a guard and the race is on a cool little action tune plays. I don't know what it would be like without it. It would be nice though, if there was a bit more variation. Sound Effects in this game are superb. Each weapon has its own sound effect making the game more realistic. Plus be careful of how loud your weapons are near the guards, they will hear you! Also be careful of walking on grids, your footsteps are also quite audible!
Controls:
As expected the controls are super responsive (this is especially needed for a sneak an chase type game), I have no complaints here. The + Control Pad is used for basic north, south, east, west, and diagonal movement. B Button is for shooting your currently selected weapon, or when flattened against a wall: scout (scroll the screen). A Button is for punching (either enemy guards or buttons), or when flattened against a wall: make a noise. The START button toggles between army-crawling and standing. SELECT opens the menu screen...
When in the menu screen:
Equip Weapons
Equip Items
START - Use the Codec
Final Comments:
Great graphics, sound and controls make this game a very attractive buy. The difficulty was a bit frustrating in the end but I guess that's because I can be impatient. Apart from this it's lots of fun and well worth having a good look at.
