the noise and the fray.
For a house full of books,
and a garden of flowers.

Life Application Bible-KJV Although this is "out of print" according to Amazon.com you can try a search for it, or you may find it at Christian Book Distributors It is a good study Bible. It has wonderful notes, maps, time-lines and charts.
cover Words That Hurt, Words That Heal This is a wonderful Bible study book. (currently being used in the online Bible study at the "Let-Us-Pray" chat ministry)

"This book has people talking. Carefully. The tongue may be small. Yet it wields an astonishing power. James compares it to a wild horse, a wandering ship, or a raging forest fire. "I wish I could place love and truth deep in my mind to filter every word I speak," writes Carole Mayhall. Our mouths are supposed to be fountains of life (Prov. 10:11), but all too often they sound like babbling brooks. "

    HOMESCHOOL HELPS
The 7 Laws of the Learner This is not just a book for homeschoolers (but I couldn't figure out where to put it) It is for anyone, who teaches anything to any kind of student, really. Here you can learn the real "whys and wherefores" of students and teachers. It has been an "eye opener" for me.
    • Home School Manual A very thorough book. I read this when I first started and refer to it often. articles from repected homeschoolers of differing backgrounds and philosophies. Also contains "what my child should learn" in each grade, as well as curriculum addresses and support group names. A must have for starting out. This current link is for the 7th edition, still a great resource.

    • The Giant Encyclopedia of Theme Activities for Children 2 to 5 A great resource of ideas for individual or group activities. arranged by seasons, Holidays, subjects, etc.

    • Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills for Preschool Nice book of tear-out comsumable pages. This would be a good book for 4 year olds to do while older chilren are working, they can really feel they are "doing" school too. Covers leters, numbers shapes, etc.

    • Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills for Kindergarten Follows after the above, same format covers basic skills, letters (upper and lower case), numbers, civics concepts, basic phonics, etc. Nice as asupplement to a regular curriculum, yet not enough repetition to be your only source.

    • The Internet Kids & Family Yellow Pages (2nd edition) HUGE source of "cool" stuff for everyone on the "net". Includes addresses for sites on culture, biology, cats, dance, farming, history, languages, gardening, music, sports, U.S. government, video games, zoology and tons more!!

    • My First Bible Fun Book A very nice "coloring book" style activity book. Everything is Bible based with most pages having a scripture reference for the activity. Includes: alphabet and numbers to trace and color, cut and paste pages, cut and paste projects for presents and Holidays. Only minimal supplies needed (i.e., crayons, glue, construction paper etc. This is another good pre-school book to keep little hands busy while older children need mom's attention.

    • The Big Book of Bible Crafts & Projects Here you will find a seemingly inexhaustable source of craft projects. Sections include: Workspaces, Tools & recipes, Projects, Scripture memory aides, Bulletin board ideas, and Patterns. A great book for sunday school teachers and childrens church workers too.

    • Three Young Pilgrims A lovely story about three young children at Plymouth. "Richly detailed paintings show how the pilgrims lived after landing at Plymouth, through dark winter and into the busy days of spring, summer and fall." Of course it includes the first Thanksgiving. This book has wonderfully detailed pictures with plenty of explanation as to exactly how the ships, towns, land and indians looked, as well as how they worked together. (ages 5-10)

    • Big Red Barn Very sweet book about a farm. Margaret Wise Brown's timeless story of all the charming things you'll find around a barn. Gorgeous drawings, and whimsical animals keep you looking at every detail (can you find the little butterfly on almost every page?) I found so many things to share with my child in this book I practically didn't need the words! A peaceful book for bed time.

    • Baby Animals Another fine book by Margaret Brown. This one is all about the cuddly world of baby animals. It depicts children with animals and how parents animals love and care for their young. Very nice illustrations and informative text.

    HISTORICAL

Diary of an Early American Boy This is a fantastic book to have when you study about pioneers or the westward expansion etc. The drawings are detailed pen and ink with huge amounts of descriptions as to how life really was from day to day. In our modern age we have lost the sense of how the seasons really affected the way people lived. A lovely addition to any library, very good for elementary students too!

Pioneer Woman These are the stories of the women who went with the men to the Kansas Praries. Draw from actual diaries, these women tell the fascinating tales of how they survived desolation, fights against the cattle men, dust storms and so much more. Another must have for history buffs, especially when studying U.S. History.

Abraham Lincoln: The Prarie Years & The War Years This is Sanburg's classic work on the life at times of one of the greatest Presidents.

First Ladies A wonderful book by Margaret Truman, daughter President Truman, that chronicles the lives of our first ladies. The chapters are arrange by subject which keeps this a very interesting book. We learn so much about the presidents and their accomplishments it is nice to learn more about their wives, and their causes.

A Chance to Die Elisabeth Elliot writes this book of "The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael" Reading this book puts me to shame and challenges me at the same time. I am inspired by Amy's life and her zeal for the Lord. Her life is captured on these pages, and we are privileged to also be able to read some of her personal journal writings. An excellant book for teen girls as well as women.

To the Golden Shore: The Life of Adoniram Judson "Drawing on letters and church records, Courtney Anderson paints a poignant potrait of Judson's early life in dealing with the conflict between his desire for material success and the inner call to serve God." This book tells of his commitment to win the Burmese people to Christ and to translate the Bible into their language.

Encouragement and Instuction in Spirtual Things

Her fathers ministries changed also and the family learned valuable lessons from those changes.

Lena While in working in the "infirmary" of Greensboro College, Margaret met Lena, in charge of the kitchen and full of love and stories, songs and food for the soul and body. Other Great Books of Encouragement

Fascinating Womanhood Not your average "feel good about myself" book. Helen Andelin is very different in her approach to woman and how we interact with men. If you are ready for a very serious look at how we are different, look here. She covers such things as: How to become the ideal woman, What men find fascinating in women, How to understand men, How to bring out the best in your husband, and so much more. (I learned alot form this book!) (This is not a Christian book, but a very moral one)

Man of Steel and Velvet Dr. Aubrey Andelin is the husband of the above author. This is his companion book for husbands. It is helpful to husbands in learning about how their wives see things differently from them, because they were made differently. Gives practical ideas on how they can work, live and love together.

Book of Virtures This is the famous book by Wiiliam J. Bennett. It is a treasury of moral stories. A very long book, it makes a good reference book. The chapters include: Self-Discipline, Compassion, Responsiblity, Friendship, Work, Courage, Perseverance, Honesty, Loyality, and Faith. Each chapter contains many wonderful stories, some are historical and other are "the moral is" type. Each chapter progresses from simple stories, that children can easily understand, to those that are more detailed and complex in their ideas. A nice gift book too!

Best of Barbara Johnson This three-in-one collection includes Stick a Geranium in Your Hat and Be Happy, Splashes of Joy in the Cesspools of Life, and Pack Up Your Gloomees in a Great Big Box, Then Sit on the Lid and Laugh. This fine lady has been called "the female Job". Her inspirational stories of personal tragedy and triumph will leave you laughing and crying at the same time.

    Home, Garden, Personal and Crafts

Tightwad Gazette I Here is my favorite author on thrifty living. Calling herself a "Frugal Zealot" Amy Dacyczyn has collected and organized a wonderful collection of tips from her formerly published newsletter. Her illustartions are simple and yet very instructive. (She is a trained artist) These books share not only her knowledge and experiences, but also those sent in by past subscribers. I know tightwads might hesitate to spend money on a book about not spending money, but this book will pay for itself very fast!

Tightwad Gazette II The next in Amy's series for "Frugal Zealots" More wonderful ideas to save you money!

Tightwad Gazette III The final in Amy Dacyczyn's books the promote "Thrift as an Alternative Lifestyle", the last of her and her subscribers hints and helps for reducing your costs. (she no longer publishes a newsletter, too bad it was great) Read them all and become a real Frugal Zealot

The 15 Minute Meal Planner As the cover says, " A realistic approsch to a healthy lifestyle" This a great book wriiten by two Christian women to help other get meals on the table quickly without sacrifices time or taste. Some of the chapters include ideas on, food myths, helping my family to change,Bible perspectives, shopping guids, and of course the recipes!

Square Foot Gardening If you have a small backyard, a big backyard, or NO backyard, you can still grow a garden. Using this Square Foot method you can have a garden anywhere. Even people in wheel-chairs can adapt this method (instructions given) so they can enjoy the beauty and healthful benefits of growing your own food (or at least some of it) Children as well can have their own garden, a practical way to get them involved in the garden and give them something to be responsible for.

Style is not a Size This is a great book for any lady who feels because she is above a size 14 she can not be stylish. Here you will read about some of the myths and tricks used in the fashion industry (did you know there are as many size 8's as 18's in the world, but you wouldn't think so looking at the stores) You will also she sketches of good classic styles, hair cuts that flatter, do's and don't for dressing, as well as a nice collection of addresses for catalogs and groups that specialize in larger size clothing. A great boost to self-esteem can be found here.

Sewing Express I like this book over other sewing books, because it goes a bit beyond the basics, with some great tricks for nice results. Nancy Zieman, has her own TV show and in this book she shares some of her favorite ideas for garment projects. Some of the areas covered are various aspects of: Blouses, Jackets, Skirts, Pants, Reversibles, Accessories and a few patterns. The goal of this book is to streamline your tradition techniques to give you more time to be creative, or to get more done! The color pictures and detailed illustrations really help to guide you step by step with each project
