Datu Sumakwel

--After a year of settling in the new lands, Datu Sumakwel set out to find the mountain inhabited by the god BULALAKAW. Because of this, he left all his belongings to his vassal Gurunggurung not knowing that his wife Kapinangan had her eye on him. Eventually sensing that there was something wrong, Sumakwel returns to his kingdom to find his nets had not been cast to sea. Knowing for sure that something was amiss, he told his wife and servants that he was going away again and that he was going to leave very early. At midnight, he climbed up the ceiling and sure enough, his wife calls for Gurunggurung on the pretext of an errand as soon as he disappeared. As Gurunggurung walks into the house heading to Kapinagan’s arms, Sumakwel, who was hiding on the ceiling, aimed and flung his spear killing Gurunggurung on the spot. Thinking that the spear fell from the ceiling accidentally, Kapinagan exclaimed that it should have been Sumakwel who died. As she did this, she cut off Gurunggurung’s appendages for she could not lift the man all by herself. The next day, Sumakwel pretended to come back home carrying a basketful of fishes. He then asked his wife to cut the fishes and prepare them for cooking. She exclaimed that it was not becoming of her status to do the work of an ALIPIN. Slyly, Sumakwel responds saying that his wife is adept at cutting up men but cannot cut a mere fish. Upon this remark, Kapinagan realizes that her husband knew what happened and recognized that such knowledge had sealed her fate.
