Christopher Martin's will is dated 19 March 1820 and was recorded in Hardy County on 11 April 1820 (Will Book 3:62). Witnesses were Jethro Nevill, John Rotruck, and Eli Moore. James Martin was executor. The will follows: "In the name of god Amen I Christopher Martin of the County of Hardy and state of Virginia being of sound mind do appoint my son James Martin my Ex[ecu]t[o]r in full. To my beloved wife Mary I leave the home place until the younger children shall become of age and then the thirds of said place for life and should either of her children die before they shall become of age its share of said place shall go to the three oldest children which is John, James, and Henry. To my sons John and Henry I leave the land which I hold the Mountain and which my son John now lives on to be equally divided between them and if they should sell any part thereof, the money to be divided between them and to my son James. I leave the Rotruck place and my rifle gun and all the movable property to be sold and after my debts are paid the balance to be equally divided, first given to my beloved wife the one third. This I acknowledge to be my last will and testament this the 19th day of March 1820. Signed Christopher Martin." |
