Thirty-seven years ago the deceased became the wife of Mr. Joseph Scherr, and of this union only three children survive. In 1857 she immigrated to the United States with her husband where after residing sometime in the west, they settled in Preston County of this State. From whence about 16 years ago they removed to Maysville, at which place, with the exception of a few years spent in Washington, D. C. they have resided ever since. While at Washington Mrs. Scherr unfortunately contracted a malarial fever from which she never fully recovered, and which finally caused her death. When last attacked with this disease she was fully conscious that her end was near and felt that she was prepared and perfectly willing to meet her God. She was a firm believer in the Christian religion, and an estimable patter of the faith she professed. All who knew her loved her and respected her for her many virtues and excellent life. She was a faithful and devoted wife, a loving mother and a true good woman. While the chief delights was in the welfare of her own family, she did not neglect the poor or the sick, and left behind her a name that is like sweet perfume, and will be embalmed in the memory of all who knew her. She will be greatly missed in the community but in the home, stricken by this great sorrow, who shall take her place? May God Comfort the bereaved husband and children, and help them to realize that their Lose is her eternal gain. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.” ********************************************************************************************************** Eloise Lorraine Schell, 50 of Petersburg, died Wednesday, February 10, 1999 at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. Mineral Daily News Tribune Friday January 10, 1941 FATHER AND FOUR DAUGHTERS BURN TO DEATH IN DWELLING NEAR ANTIOCH EARLY TODAY. STARK TRAGEDY STRIKES HOME OF HENRY SCHELL ON DAY WIFE AND MOTHER WAS TO BE BURIED. ONLY CHARED BONES LEFT OF FAMILY: THREE ROOM HOUSE DISCOVERED BURNED TO GROUND AT 6:30 THIS MORNING. Stark tragedy struck at a Mineral County home early this morning when a father and four daughters burned to death on the day their mother and wife was to be buried. The dead are Henry Schell, 74; Ida Feaster Schell 24; Louvada Schell 13; Laura Schell, 11 and Tempia Schell 7: The home was located on what is known as the Penneroil Road about 2 miles from Antioch. The road branches off to the right from the secondary road to Antioch just before it reaches Graysons Gap. The tragedy was discovered about 6:30 this morning by Ira McNear, who lived farther up the road, while on his way to work at the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company in Luke. At that time the house was burned to the ground and only smouldering ashes remained. Only the charred bones of the five bodies were left. State Troopers R. R. Karickhoff and L. W. Kelly spent hours this morning sifting the bones with shovels, rakes and pitch forks from the debris left by the fire. Recognition of course, was impossible and the remains will probably be buried in one casket. The house was a three-room frame structure. Schell slept in the front room while the daughters slept in a room to the left. From the location of the bones it can be assumed that the girls awakened to find the house in flames and rushed from their room to the front but were overcome before they could make their escape. A drastic note in the tragedy is that Mrs. Esther Schell, the girl’s mother and Schell’s wife who died Wednesday was to have been buried in Lahmansville at 11 o’clock this morning. Vance Doll of Antioch who was to have taken the Schell family to the funeral was one of the first to arrive at the scene. Mrs. Schell’s funeral has been postponed. The body was being kept at the Rogers Funeral Parlor here until time for the funeral. The cause of the fire is not known, but it is thought to have started from a stove being placed to near a bed. The many neighbors and friends who called on the Schell’s yesterday to extend sympathy on the death of Mrs. Schell, said that a sheet metal stove was less than eight inches from Schell’s bed in the front room. On the bed was a straw tick, which could easily have caught fire from the nearby stove. It is assumed that Schell was overcome in his sleep and the girls found the house in flames too late to make their escape. With the exception of a house directly across the road, there is no other habitation nearer than approximately three quarters of a mile. Paul Rotruck, who lives across the road from the Schell’s told Prosecuting Attorney Joseph E. Hodgson that he was not at home last night and those living nearest the scene said they did not see any flames during the night. A neighbor who lives over a hill from the Schell home said he was up at midnight too see about the weather and noticed nothing then. From the way the ashes were smouldering when the tragedy was discovered it can be judged that the fire started early this morning, maybe as late as four 0’clock. A factor that added to complete destruction of the home was a huge stack of old magazines in the corner of the front room. Mrs. Ed Coffman and her daughter, who were the last to see the Schell’s alive at 10:30 o’clock last night, said that there was perhaps a small truckload of magazines in the room. The entire family was wiped out by the tragedy. Schell however is survived by two brothers and one sister, Miss Annie and Willie Schell, of Cumberland and Milton Schell of Cincinnati. Funeral services for the entire family will be held Sunday morning at eleven o’clock at the Lahmansville Church with interment in Lahmansville cemetery. The Rev. Benjamin Reed will officiate. The remains of Mr. Schell and four daughters will be buried in one casket. ********************************************************************************************************** Margaret Mae Steele, 86 of Mt.
