Walter Calvin Whittaker, 86, Antioch Road, New Creek, WV died Monday March 26, 1979 at Hopemont Hospital. Born in Martin, WV, Grant County, he was a son of the late Tom and Jane (Rotruck) Whittaker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Effie L. (Leatherman) Whittaker. Whittaker was a retired employee of the B&O Railroad and a member of the Knobley Church of the Brethren. Surviving are two sons, Robert Whittaker of Antioch Road, New Creek, and Galen C. Whittaker of Moorefield; two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Jane Riggleman of Terra Alta and Mrs. Wilda Evans of Moorefield; two half-brothers, Truman Whittaker and Wesley Whittaker both of Kitzmiller, Maryland; two half-sisters, Mrs. Vola Wilt of Kitzmiller, Maryland and Mrs. Julia Rhodes of Deer Park, Maryland; ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four great–great-grandchildren. Services were held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Knobley Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Sam Goldizen officiating. Roy William Whetzel, Sr., 76, of Stafford, VA died January 9, 1997, in Fredricksburg. Born June 19, 1920, in Landes, Grant County, WV, he was the son of the late Clarence and Sadie (Alexander) Whetzel. He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Whetzel. Surviving are his wife, Hazel (Borror) Whetzel; three sons, Roy W. Whetzel, Jr. and Ralph Whetzel of Stafford, and Gary Whetzel of Fredricksburg; three daughters, Wanda Moseley, Sue Abel, and Dottie Cook all of Stafford; three brothers, Forest Whetzel of Stafford, Walter Whetzel of Petersburg, WV, and Raymond Whetzel of Lorain, OH; four sisters, Jane Chapman of Elk Garden, Cathern Kuhn of Bayard, Goldie Wratchford of Moorefield, and Betty Rowland of Chillicothe, OH; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mr. Whetzel was an Army veteran, a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and was a retired heavy equipment operator for the federal government at the Quantico Marine Corps Base. Burial was in the Stafford Memorial Park, Stafford, VA. ******************************************************************************************** Martha Jane Whetzel – in paper January 31, 1989 Martha Jane Whetzel, 93, Moorefield, formerly of Petersburg, died Monday, Jan. 23, 1989, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. She was born Dec. 6, 1895 in Smoke Hole, the daughter of the late Henry H. Alt and Lavina Bell (Kimble) Alt. Her husband, Albert Whetzel, Jr. died June 23, 1976. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, two sons, three sisters and three brothers. Surviving are four sons, Vernon Whetzel, Logan, Ohio; Charles Whetzel, Upper Tract; Arvil Whetzel, Petersburg and Albert Whetzel Jr., Arthur. Six daughters, Arbutus Kesner and Anna Bennett, both of Moorefield; Rhoda Berg, Maysville; Ruth Engle, Purgitsville; Clara Nell Ours, Cabins and Cloda Bell Kisamore, Arthur; three sisters, Nina Helmick, Upper Tract; Rhoda Roy and Margie Davis of Maysville; 55 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Services were held at the Schaeffer Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Eversole and Rev. Stanley Kile officiating. Interment was in Wilson Chapel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Grant Memorial Hospital. ****************************************************************************************** Mrs. Stella Ann Walters, 98, of Petersburg, died Sunday, September 8, 1991, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. Born August 22, 1893, in Miletus, Doddridge County, she was the daughter of the late William Arthur and Lavern (Hall) Ridgeway. Mrs. Walters had been a resident at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, since August 2, 1983. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her husband, Jack Walters, Sr., died June 15, 1955. One daughter, five sisters and three brothers also preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Jack Walters, Jr., Petersburg; one daughter, Mrs. Ned (Mary) Martin, Petersburg, a stepdaughter, Jenny Brown, Oakmont, PA; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A graveside service was conducted Wednesday in the Stalnake Cemetery, Glenville, by the Rev. Robert Anderson. Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Burlington Children’s Home, Burlington, or the Grant County Nursing Home. ******************************************************************************** Curtis Odel Whetzel, 65, of Winchester, VA, formerly of Dorcas, died Monday, November 16, 1992, of an apparent heart attack while hunting in Winchester. Born in Dorcas, he was the son of Curry “Doc” Whetzel, a resident of the Grant County Nursing Home and the late Ruth Mae (Vance) Whetzel. In addition to his mother, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Delores (Barth) Whetzel, July 3, 1973; one sister and one brother. Mr. Whetzel was a retired carpenter and had over 30 years of service with Local Union #1665, Alexandria, VA. Surviving are his wife, Berta Whetzel; four sons, Kenneth O. Whetzel, New Baltimore, VA, Daniel C. Whetzel and David C. Whetzel, both of Winchester, and Michael J. Whetzel, Front Royal, VA; three daughters, Joyce K. Gregory, Cleveland, Ohio, Jacqueline K. Herr, Manassa, VA and Mary K. Huffstickler, Woodbridge, VA; two stepsons; three sisters, Betty Cook, Maysville, Jennie Woods and Jean Runions, both of Dorcas; one brother, Junior Whetzel, Petersburg; and 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were conducted at the Lee Funeral Home, Manassas, Thursday afternoon. Interment was at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 699, Vienna, VA 22180. *********************************************************************** Bradford R. “Doc” White, 79, of Petersburg died Saturday, November 30, 1985, at his residence. Born November 11, 1906 at Sugargrove, PA, he was a son of the late Leroy White and Olive (Turner) White. Mr. White was retired from AM Plate Glass Company of Wheeling, a member of American Legion Post 18, Cameron, charter member of Golden “K” Club and a member of First Methodist Church, also of Cameron. He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mary Mildred (Buzzard) White; two sisters, Grace Lewis, Oklahoma City, OK, Louolive Strobel, Warfordsburg, PA; two brothers, Clyde White, Oklahoma City, OK, Sam White, St. Petersburg, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Anderson Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Robert Harshberger officiated with interment in the Highland Cemetery, Cameron. *********************************************************** Cecil Roth Winters, 92, of Horse Shoe Run, died Tuesday, January 23, 1996, at his home. Born August 31, 1903, near Horse Shoe Run, he was the son of the late Charles William and Cora (Christman) Winters. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 64 years, Anna (Milkint) Winters, June 18, 1986; one daughter, Louise Life; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; two brothers; one stepson; and one step grandson. Mr. Winters was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, Red House. He owned and operated the Nehi-Royal Crown Bottling plant in Clarksburg and the Brookside Farms, Aurora. In 1949 he moved to Brookside, raised and showed Angus cattle until retirement. He served a number of years as a Preston County Commissioner serving as president several times. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Roth Winters; one son, Kenneth R. Winters of Bridgeport; one daughter, Marie Teets of Horse Shoe Run; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five stepsons; two stepdaughters; and numerous step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Friday afternoon at the Hinkle Funeral Home chapel, Davis, with the Rev. Daniel Hammel officiating. Interment was in the Red House Lutheran Cemetery. Wolford, 90, formerly of Harney and Pasadena, Md., and Cabins, died Thursday, May 5, 1994, at North Arundel Convalescent Center, Glen Burnie, Md., where he had resided for several years. Born May 22, 1903, in Cabins, he was the son of the late John and Ellen (Moyers) Wolford. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sarah (Moyers) Wolford, Jan. 15, 1981; three sons, William, Paul and Richard Wolford; one daughter, Carol Rankin; two brothers, Ira and Oscar Wolford; and one sister, Martha Miller. Mr. Wolford had been a carpenter and farmer all his life. Surviving are two sons, Denton and Roy Wolford; three daughters, Alverta (Mrs. Kenneth) Miller, Bonnie (Mrs. Francis) Selby, and Laura Mae Connor; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Monday at Pipe Creek Cemetery, Linwood, Md., with Pastor Samuel Garrett and Pastor Terry Lamers officiating. ************************************************************************************** |
