Junior Liz Tran completed her successful comeback from an injury and paced the Marshall girls to a 26-29 victory over Bishop Ireton in a season-opening scrimmage Wednesday, August 29 at Burke Lake Park.

Tran, who missed most of last season with a stress fracture in her leg, surprised many by sticking with Ireton's All-Met honorable mention standout Jessica Wolfe for 2 1/2 miles before Wolfe went on to victory in a winning time of 21:28.

Tran took second in 21:53, with teammates Beth Stein (third, 22:23) and Jessica Lee (fourth, 22:29) not far behind. Sophomore Stein and junior Lee's top-five finishes were critical to Marshall's narrow victory as was junior Lara Simonton's eight-place finish in 23:51. Sophomore Jacqui Yahn closed out the Marshall scoring by finishing ninth in 24:01 in her very impressive cross country debut.

Freshman Laura Colello (11th, 24:13) got her cross country career off to a fine start and sophomore Lexi Witman (13th, 24:51) is two minutes ahead of her Burke Lake time at this point last year. Junior Theresa Kattula also stood out with a gutsy performance, placing 16th in 25:23.
