Hunger Pay

Before the beach beckoned
And the trees chirped
Even before the french followed
Across the street
She invited me for tomato soup
It was lunch and I was hungry
With one red spoon

I never believed that broth
Was good for me
I didn't eat it
Something simple like that
Could change how I live
Choosing not to eat

Or not to sleep
Easy, serious things
I can't enjoy
Peels of victory
Bathed in red
Eyes unsaid

Where will you go
Without the food to nourish
It's nice to be in eden
When there's so much fruit
But nicer still before The red ones
