Ann Brown's "When We Were Young"
© March 2004 Ann Brown
Boys and girls with happy faces
Singing songs of far away places
Skipping ropes swinging high
Reaching up into the sky

Marbles rolling in the gutter
Butties made of jam and butter
Pastel blouses
Rows of houses

Ladies standing at their gate
Doing shopping on the slate
Watching eyes
Telling lies

Window cleaners washing sills
Working hard to pay the bills
Watch the milkman on his round
Hear the bottles clinking sound

Little boys with knees of scars
Catching fishes in their jars
Scuff their shoes on worn out cobbles
Jumpers covered with fluffy bobbles

Swapping comics in the backs
Jumping off the coal yard stacks
Playing tick and having fun
Laughing in the Summer sun

Little girls with lipstick lollies
Playing house with wrapped up dollies
Go to bed with happy faces
Laughing smiling childrens faces
