You leave your footsteps in the cake,
Yet not a sound do you make,
As you tread your unknown path,
Stopping for an occasional bath,
To wash off the dust from outdoors,
And darkened rooms and hardwood floors,
From tables and the T.V. too,
Then it's off to sample some beef stew,
As it simmers in it's pot,
You lick up some, but not a lot,
Just enough to make mom mad,
For tasting all that's to be had,
But then, why not? It's your domain,
Your cozy shelter from the rain,
Exploring that which meets your gaze,
Or lounging in a sleepy daze,
There you were, and there you'd stay,
Until time came.....and took you away,
Gone before I could say goodbye,
Unable to spare one moment to cry,
My soul now stained by regret,
For you were far more than a pet,
You were my friend, my companion true,
Replacements simply will not do,
Forever empty, my grief unquelled,
Lost for words to say.....farewell........
