Kie Barr's "Please Say You Remember Me"
© 2003 Kie Barr
On my break from college
I came home to see
All of the people
Who loved me
Who helped make me, me

I went to the house
I remember so well
Knocking and waiting
No one coming to see

I opened the door
Just a pinch
To yell for grandmother
Whom I had came to see

I opened the door
Then I heard the greeting
For me to come in & have a seat

I passed thru the rooms
Filled with memories you see
This antique and that one
With nicks & scratches
Made mainly by me

I went to the room
I knew that’s where she’d be
For this had always been her favorite room
With the piano & pictures she loved to see

There in her chair and her ottoman too
Set this little old lady
With a lap throw for warmth
Covering her ankles
Extending to her knees

I walked over and hugged her
Telling her how beautiful she was
Oh and how much I have missed you
And this is everything I have done

Before I got far, I suddenly saw
This wasn’t my grandmother
No it wasn’t her by far

Did Charles come with you Linda?
I have missed him true
He gets so busy, he forgets the mother he knew

I whispered to her
That I am not them
I am Kie, your Kie
Remember me?

Her mind drifted away to another time
Gazing at the photographs all were aligned
The cover was dusty on the piano she played
This hurt my heart because then I could see
My grandmother wasn’t with me
Just a shell of someone she use to be

I lifted the cover and played with the keys
I picked up the picture of her and of me
Walking over to her, bending down at her side
Showing her my favorite picture
That captured the music of her and I in the seat

She softly smiled, nostalgia on her face
Then she looked at me, only to say
I don’t know that woman
Though lovely she is
What a precious little girl
I see those pictures every day
And I wonder to myself
Who are those people framed over there
Where did that piano come from?
Yesterday it was not there

I wanted to cry, but I didn’t know how
I couldn’t mourn for my grandmother
For she was still here
So I sat down in a chair and talked for awhile
Eventually leaving, knowing
She wouldn’t remember me being there…..
