97TH  REGIMENT OF NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS
Taken from F. W. BEERS & Co. History of Montgomery and Fulton Co.’s Reprinted by Heart of the Lakes Publishing Co. The record of several companies in which Fulton County men fought for the nation. The 97th Regiment NY Volunteers was organized in Booneville N.Y. Commander Col Chas. Wheelock was in charge the Regiment was mustered into service February 18th, 1862. Regiment left Boonville for Washington March 12th but remained in Albany one week arrived in N.Y. March 18th where the troops were given the Enfield Rifled Musket. The 97th arrived in Washington March 20th. In May, the regiment was assigned to Gen. Duryee’s Brigade, Gen. Rickett’s Division ans was under Gen. McDowell’s command during the march to Shenandoah Valley in June 1862. The regiment was engaged in ten battles and suffered great loss, being reduced to less then 100 effective men before the close of the war. During September and October 1863, it received a large number of conscripts. The regiment was attached to the 2d brigade, 2d division, 1st army corps, in Dec. 1863.
