A Note About This Page

I started this page back in the 1990’s when I was in graduate school. At that time, few cities had LGBT film festivals, there were few web pages, the LOGO cable network did not exist, nor did websites l ike IMDB or Amazon which allow you to easily find any special niche films. At the time I considered this a service to the Gay community.

Like many of us, I grew up in a semi-rural town, in isolation from the LGBT community. Furthermore, during my adolescence in the 1980’s, my only exposure to alternate lifestyles was a few films seen on cable: Cabaret, Norman... Is That You?, Partners, Victor/Victoria, and Zoro the Gay Blade. Other than that, I only knew that terms for who I was happened to be considered swear words or insults by the other boys at school. I realize that many within our community consider our depiction in these films as less than positive, but at that time during my life they were my lifeline.

At this time of my life, I am less interested in melancholy, “arty” films, which so many others fawn upon. My favorites include Beautiful Thing (1996) and Maurice (1987) based upon the E. M. Forster novel of the same title, because they have happy endings. Also I think that The Staircase (1969) starring Richard Burton and Rex Harrison as a Gay couple in 1969 has great historical significance. I am also still very loyal to Victor/Victoria (1982) for the reason given above.
