~ ...and then there were none by kerrie smith ~ ~angst, death, present tense~
this story is understated as kerrie kills off every member of the batclan. it has a very quiet tone and uses the unique style she has to the fullest. none of the characters are named so new fans will find it difficult to follow along but other fans will rejoice in the subtle way she portrays them all. i amaze at ker's quality to create hilarity but still create something as simple and clean as this. the present tense gives it a slightly surreal quality that lends itself well to the piece.

~ gotchoo by skh ~ ~humor~
i'll say this about sarah, she can write male characters like anything (even if she does put in slashy vibes in a gen piece.) witness gotchoo, a tale of alcohol, ego, buffalo wings at hooters, strip clubs, and infamous tattoo parlors. guys acting like guys, being completely in character, and both taking a moment off from carrying the weight of the world. it's a well crafted narrative about nothing in particular, except maybe a tattoo.

~ dcu woke up gay by kerithwyn jade ~ ~copious parings, humor~
it's not really a fic, but it's still damned funny. the title is exactly what it's all about, what if our favorite dcu characters suddenly woke up gay, how would they react, what would they say, who would they go and try to woo? it's short but memorable with great reactions and ideas. it's spawned an entire website but this remains the original, and one of the best.

~ i was superman by sarah todd (unrevised version - no link availible) ~ ~angst, death, suicidal themes~
hmm... you're not going to be able to find this story anywhere, which was a shame because it was a great one shot or prologue or whatever you wanted to take it as. a revised version by sarah todd can be found under john westcott's ff.net user id. this piece had incredible tone of dispair. it had an honest display of emotion. people grieve in all different ways. their thoughts can be introverted. and they can even be jealous of the dead at times. it's pathetic/needs validiation/love/approval at his worst, and it was impossible to stop reading.

~ incidentals by nw's chick ~ ~dick/tim, dick/bruce, dick/joey, dick/garth, dick/babs (kinda), dick/omc, roy/omc, au, drama, series, underage sex~
what a messy blend of canon, but becky makes it work. she takes snippets of dick grayson's life, from his time as robin, to his landmarks with the titans, to his progression into nightwing, to his move to bludhaven, and goes beyond into the future. it shows his first relationships, his missteps, his mistakes, his deep committment, his complex life until it culminates with a happy ending. this fic entranced me with it's "moment in time" style and it never disappointed.

~ letting go by dannell lites ~ ~babs/dick, angst, au, death, first pov~
this is my favorite story in the entire fandom by the late dannell. this one shot is told from babs's point of view as she watches the anguish that dick grayson endures. the entire piece has this surreal quality about it and it makes the reader feel as if they're watching through a window, so close yet so far. dannell wove a wonderful heart wrenching tale. this story made me find a copy of the leslie fish song used within. also a year after first reading, i noticed a detail i'd never quite gotten about the double meaning of the use of frère jacques which only goes to show how much detail she had employed.

~ perspectives v: the end by haydee ~ ~babs/dick, bruce/ofc, tim/ofc, alternating pov, au, drama, first pov, series~
this was one of my first stories i read when i started with nw fic. at first it confused me because it blends comics with animated continuity with even movie-verse so much so that i had to email the author to ask. although the title states 'the end' there's actually a sequel to this piece. it's part of a series, but this piece remains my favorite mostly because it's focused on dick. moving forward rapidly in time, dick and tim all make their own decisions regarding bruce on a near death bed. it's the culmination that i wanted since the very first story. the ending is so peaceful, accepting, just giving the reader this sense of 'right' that everything's not okay but it could be, it definetly could be. the characters are written with such honesty and a range of emotions that it's hard not to be immersed and thusly moved.
