Hanging tube feeder hanging in tree at second floor level
Safflower We changed from black oil sunflower in this feeder to discourage the squirrels.  The Mountain Chickadees, finches and grosbeaks love the safflower seed.
Hanging tube feeder Safflower hanging from pole at first floor level Mountain Chickadees, Purple Finch, Cassin's Finch, Stellar's Jays After trying squirrel baffles and removing overhanging branches to outmaneuver the squirrels,  we gave up and switched from black oil sunflower to safflower.

This is the second time I have tried feeding thistle.  I have tried putting the feeder in several locations but for some reason we do not seem to have many Pine Siskins or Goldfinches in this particular area.  Siskins are quite common in Big Bear which is nearby but  a little higher in elevation than we are.  I had several Siskins our first year here but they seem to have disappeared.

The different baths we have placed throughout the yard attract some species that will not come to feeders.
