In order for a pointing device to operate it must have a driver installed.  A driver is a set of instructions that tells the pointing device how to operate.

Some pointing devices uses different drivers than others, because some pointing devices perform different task, and need special drivers to perform those task.

A device driver is responsible for interpreting the x and y signals generated by the pointing device.  Some pointing devices can use other manufactures drivers but is not recommended.

There are many types of pointing devices used today, most are similar in the way they operate.  Microsoft supplies many of the popular drivers in there windows operating system.  You can install a new pointing device driver by going into you control panel clicking on add new hardware, you can let windows default to search for the best driver available and install it or choose not to let windows search and manually install the driver yourself.

When installing a new pointing device to your system, you should remove any previous mouse drivers used to operate your old mouse.  Turn your pc off and plug in your new mouse then reboot the system and let windows plug & play detect your new hardware device.
