1). Clean out your windows temp directory.

Right click start then click explorer, find the temp and open it. highlight and delete all the file in the directory.

2). Control your harddrive space (virtual memory).

Click start then setting and control panel.  Then click on the system icon.  Click on the performance tab and click the file system button.  Set you computer to network server then click ok.  Now click the virtual memory button.  On this setting you have to know how much ram is in you pc.  Where is says "let me specify my own virtual memory settings"  Check that space.  Where it says minimum and maximum enter in three times the amount of ram you have on your system.  Then click ok.  Answer yes to restart your computer so changes can take effect.

3). Clean out your recycle bin.

Once you are sure all file in your recycle bin is no more use to you empty your recycle bin of all files.

4). Run scandisk to correct files and harddrive damage.

Run scandisk in windows and in dos.  To run scandisk in the dos mode you must first have a boot disk.  Put the disk in drive A: and boot the pc.  Once at the A: prompt type scandisk and hit the enter key.  

To run scandisk in windows click on the start button then programs then accessories, click on system tools and then scandisk.  

 

5). Run defrag.

Click on start then programs.  Click Accessories then system tools.  Find "Disk Defragmenter" and click it to start your defrag.
