BOOK ABSTRACT:

Two of the main cities of New France (1535-1763), Quebec City and New Orleans, figure amongst the most famous worldwide tourist destinations. For more than two centuries, their ancient districts have benefited from the steady interest of tourists, attracted by the mark of History left on their buildings and public places. Aside from History, the French origins of these two cities certainly accounts for one of their most attractive features, despite the fact that both were lost by the French, and that their inhabitants eventually had to adopt the ways of their English conquerors. Why, then, has their French character become (and still remains) so desirable?

This book argues that heritage should be considered as the cultural industry of our time. Heritage is consumed today, the same way other products of mass consumption are. Mass tourism, in turn, is having major repercussions on the landscapes of both Quebec City and New Orleans. A townscape, apparently made up from start to finish from a French model, is being transformed into an international tourist consumption landscape, a contemporary result of deconstruction. In that sense, Quebec City and New Orleans are a reflection of our postmodern society in this transition period we are now witnessing.
