The Northern route is completely different from the Southern route. Towns like Lalibela, Axum and Gondar have been capitol for many years and in some aspect you still can see that.
Lalibela is world famous for the churches, carved out of the rocks; Axum has its famous stèles (obelisks), whereas Gondar has medieval castles, built by the Portugese.
The Timkat festival in commemoration of the batism of Christ by Saint John, is celebrated in three cities, but the most spectecular in Lalibela. Three days of precessions with beautiful clothes, procession crosses and music and dance. |
