Setting up MLA in Microsoft Works updated 11/2/00 Open up Works 1. Font - What size font and typeface should you use? Font is the term used to describe the shape of the type used in typing. MLA suggests and Cabrini High requires you use Times New Roman size 12 point. 1. To change the size or font click on the Tool Bar and select Font Pop-up Menu. Select Times New Roman. 2. Click on the Tool Bar and select Type Size Pop-up Menu. Select size 12. 2. Setup Margins 1. Choose File Menu and select Page Setup. The Page Setup Dialog Box will appear. 2. All Margins should be set to I" (Top, Bottom, Left Margin and Right Margin). 3. Click ok. 3. Line Spacing MLA papers are double spaced throughout. The default setting for Microsoft Works is single spacing. You must change the setting before you begin typing. To set double spacing: 1. Place the insertion point at the first line of your paper. 2. Choose Format Menu and select Paragraph. The Paragraph Dialog Box will appear. 3. Click on the Spacing Tab and use the Up Arrow in the Line Spacing Box to change the setting to 2. Click ok. 4. Header Beginning with the first page, MLA papers show a right justified heading one half inch from the top of the page with your last name in upper and lower case followed by the page number in arabic numbers. (Example: Mora 1) 1. Choose View Menu and select Headers and Footers. The Headers and Footers Dialog Box will open. 2. Type an ampersand and smah r like this &r followed by your last name. 3. Press the space bar three times to move the cursor three spaces to the right and type an ampersand and a small p like this &p 4. Click ok. The header will contain your name and page number at the right margin. 5. Click on File Menu and select Print Preview to see how the header looks on the page. 5. Your Name MLA papers do not have a formal title page. The below information is grouped at the upper left comer of the first page. It should be double-spaced. Example Your First and Last Name Jane Doe Instructors' Name Mrs. Smith Course name and number (maybe period) English I Period 2 Date must be typed it this order 8 November 1999 6. Title - Where do you type your title? 1. Your Title should be typed on the next line below the date and centered. 2. Click on the appropriate Justification Button. It is located just to the right of the B, I, U buttons to center your title. 7. Works Cited The Works Cited list is printed at the end of the paper and presents the full bibliographic information for every source cited in the body of your paper. 1. Move the cursor to the end of the last line of text. Press Enter to place the cursor on a new blank line. 2. Choose Insert Menu and select Page Break. A dotted line will appear across the page with a new page symbol. The status bar at the bottom of the screen will indicated the next page number. 3. Center the words Works Cited in upper and lower case on the top line. Double space. 4. Type entries in alphabetical order using the appropriate format for the type of reference you are citing. See your Writers, Inc. book if necessary. The first line of each entry begins at the left margin with following lines double- spaced and indented a half-inch. Double space within and between entries. Example of a work cited for an online source: Author's surname, first name. "Title of article or document." Title of Journal, newsletter, conference document, or file. volume number.issue number / or other identifyingnumber (year or publication): number of pages or paragraphs if given / or n.pag. On-line.
