DIGITAL PHOTOS AT
PORT COLUMBUS INTERNATIONAL
I spent a sunny morning at CMH, Columbus Ohio Airport with my Olympus D-600L digital camera to see if it was useful for photographing aircraft at a medium size midwestern American airport. CMH has a modest traffic of common medium range jet aircraft.
I am not expert in recognizing aircraft, so I will appreciate any corrections or amplifications of my identifications.
The closest place off the airport property to the planes is on the edge of the public highway, (Hamilton Road, SR317) bordering the eastern edge of the airport. Off the highway just south of the end of the airport fence you can turn into a parking place specifically marked for aircraft viewing. The following thumbnails were taken there. The focal length of the lens as used is comparable to a 105mm lens on 35mm film. Clicking on them will give full resolution JPEG images up to 1280x1024, which will take a little time to load.

Continental 737-200

TWA DC9
When all the 727's in the world seemed to live at DCA, I didn't appreciate what a good looking plane it is:

Delta 727
Most of the photographs below exhibit the full resolution of the original pictures, but have been cropped (not resized) to 640x512 from the original 1280 x 1024. Thus they are equivalent to a 35mm focal length of 210mm. All were taken from outside the airport perimeter fence.

America West Airbus A320

America West Boeing 737
America West has a modest hub operation here, which will be reduced during the summer.
As everywhere in the world, we get a lot of 737's:

America West 737-200

Delta 737-200
We get other members of the DC9 family too, some of them pretty noisy!

A couple of piston engine Convairs were there, too, but no particular evidence that they fly often (thumbnails - click on them for full images):

Want big airplanes? Exotic airplanes? Come when AF1 or a Concorde makes a special visit to CMH.
My conclusion is that the digital camera is marginally acceptable for this purpose when compared with the other fine aircraft photos on the web. Comments gladly received.
