Gauthier cleared to play, ready for return to Chiefs By Dale Cory Staff Writer: It's the best news Harvey Smyl has heard in a long time. Gabe Gauthier has been cleared to play for the Chilliwack Chiefs in the upcoming BCHL season. Because of the fact Gauthier is a 16-year-old, and from outside British Columbia, his future as a Chief was in jeopardy. But the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association has ruled Gauthier is OK to play. The decision was based on information provided by Gabe's parents, the Chiefs organization, Sardis Secondary School and Ross Beebe, the Chiefs educational advisor. "It's a done deal," said an ecstatic Smyl Monday. "Gabe will play with Chiefs this season ." Gauthier and the Chiefs went through the same process last year. But the decision wasn't rendered until the season had already started, which meant the Buena Park, California native missed games. This year the Chiefs pushed for an earlier decision so that Gauthier would have sufficient time to pursue an option in case the CAHA did not rule in favour. "There were a number of reasons for the decision. We certainly believe Mrs. Mussell's letter and information provided from Sardis School was a huge part in the ruling in our favour. In turn, Sardis Seniors' contribution with Gabe throughout the year and the information they provided helped make it a positive response." Gauthier had 21 goals and 55 points last year as a 15-year-old, adding 12 goals and 29 points in 30 playoff games. "Gabe was a pretty important player last year," said Smyl. "We're expecting him to be more of a contributor and leader this season - not a 16-year-old, but a 19-old experienced player." At the rink... Chiefs conditioning camp kicked off Monday night and continues until Thursday at Twin Rinks. Evaluation camp begins Friday at Twin Rinks, with the first workout at 6 p.m. Close to 60 rookies will scrimmage through the weekend. Smyl expects to take about 15 rookies to main camp, which starts one week from today.
