Aug 5 (Sunday) After a long drive we cross the Confederation Bridge into PEI. The first stop is Summerside, where we stay find a Bed n Breakfast a couple of minutes outside of town. For dinner we head to the Tyne Valley Oyster Festival, but we get there a bit too late, and miss the festivities. We have dinner at some small restaurant, and I enjoy Malpeque oysters, straight from the bay. Woo hoo!!! After dinner, I receive a voice mail from Nelson (co-worker). HIs family is down there for vacation also, and we try to meet up in Summerside. After about an hour of searching, and trying to get our cellphones to work, we finally reach find him at the harbour. We go to the restaurant where they had just left and have a couple of drinks. |

Aug 6 (Monday) We were supposed to hook up with Nelson in Cavendish, but again couldn't get through. (Warning to all those who plan on coming to this region with their mobile phones: they don't work!!!) We get to Cavendish, and it's a bit too touristy for us, so we decide to drive throught and head to a little town called Souris. We stop into the Visitor Information Centre, and find a place called "Bed & Breakfast by the Sea." (That's it pictured above). B&B by the Sea is run by Frank and Anna, Frank was the last lighthouse keeper on PEI, after they all went automated. I would highly recommend this place to anyone going to PEI, as Frank and Anna were really nice, and Frank had some great stories to tell. Oh, and breakfast in the morning was really good too. Just behind the house is a private beach that is basically deserted, and surrounded by 40 foot cliffs all around. We ran around like fools for hours. Also nearby is Basin Head beach which is crowded. There's a river that runs out into the ocean and you jump in and it shoots you about 30 miles out. (just kidding, but it's a fun ride) |
This is a view of the Souris lighthouse (Frank was the last lighthouse keeper here) taken from the dock. |
Lobster Supper, in a church hall. Kind of small, but s'all good!!! |
Aug 7 (Tuesday) We travel down to Wood's Island to catch the ferry to Nova Scotia, as we are now on our way to Cape Breton. If you're looking to save a few bucks, I suggest taking the ferry to PEI, and taking the bridge out. We missed getting good shots of the bridge, as the only good vantage point was from the New Brunswick end of the bridge. Waiting for the ferry to arrive, we check out the dock and there's a boat hauling out that days crab catch. The ferry ride is cool, and reports of dolphins and whales swimming alongside are heard. I don't see anything, but the anticipation builds for some whale watching in Cape Breton--our next destination. |
I'm not crabby at all. |
